Now james is someone who could persuade me hes never wrong so would you get lag from turning the turbo up?

im afraid i misread posts and make mistakes more than some, increasing boost wont increase lag ,lag is he time exhaust pressure takes to build to impart more boost from turbo and for that boost to ipressurise cooler and pipes,an increase in boost comes after all the inertia has been overcome

I was going to take my truck to pp tuning in louth and have a custom system made without middle box woukd this help?

You shouldn't run into any problems fitting a bigger intercooler, turning your fuel up a bit and increasing the boost, but just make sure that you do it all properly. There are a lot of people who just go silly, turning boost up to a stupid level and then not having enough fuel being injected to make all that extra air worth while. If you are going to increase your boost slightly, don't just shorten the waste gate because it pulls on the rubber actuator diaphragm inside and if it has already started to perish, the butterfly will come off at the other side and the rod will become detached. The best thing to use is a boost valve like this UNIVERSAL MANUAL BOOST CONTROLLER BALL AND SPRING VALVE | eBay. You splice it into the rubber pipe between the compressor housing and the waste gate actuator. You then rotate the knob / dial which adjusts the preload on the spring inside the valve. The more pressure on the spring, the more pressure is required to lift the ball bearing and you effectively increase boost pressure before the waste gate is actuated. You will also need a boost gauge to ensure that you are not overdoing it. As for the injection pump, it would be wise to have it adjusted whilst the landy is on a rolling road because different adjustments affect when and how much fuel is injected in relation to boost. You can very easily have too much or too little. With regards to strain on your engine, yes there will be more - it is only natural. You are putting a lot more force onto the piston as it reaches top dead centre and begins the power stroke. There is more bang on the head gasket and the valves too but to be perfectly honest, they seem to be able to take it quite well. Obviously don't go stupidly over the top because then it will just blow at its weakest point. Keep it well serviced and it should be a good improvement.

Because its cheaper than a muffler/center box

Come on lad! More bends and a perforated sooted up silencer baffle restricts flow. A nice clear section of pipe just let's the engine shove all the ****e out a lot easier, with only the restriction of the exhaust manifold, turbo and pipe diameter it's self. It made a difference to my engine - I have no silencers at all. It's stupidly loud though. You can buy glass pack / straight through silencers that deaden the sound a little but which maintain the benefit of a straight through, clear pipe.

Thanks tom i do already have a boost gauge and yes i would do it sensible im not trying to build a race car but a bit more power would be nice do you know of any other manufacturers intercoolers that i could fit like the volvo or supra ones?? or would i be better buying a 2nd hand one thats built for the 200 tdi cheers for the advice aswell

I don't really know of any alternatives that will fit without too much hassle, although pretty much anything can be made to fit. Don't forget, you could even mount an intercooler horizontally and then you open up a whole load of scope for bonnet pods and silly things like that. Personally I would go for one of the specifically designed and manufactured updated intercoolers from the likes of Allard Turbo Sport, JE Engineering or Alli Sport. They're not cheap though and that's the problem. Why don't you take a trip to your local scrappy with a tape measure and see what will drop in? Another thing to consider is the size of the core / throughput. You will find that some intercoolers have less throughput than others which could end up holding back the air flow as so to speak. Generally, if you take an intercooler off a vehicle with an engine of at least 2495 CC, you should be alright. Look at slitty's (Japanese motors) like Toyotas, particularly with engines over 3 litres like the Hilux Surf for example.

Fitting a front mounted intercooler and a little tweak from the turbo makes a huge difference, highly recommend it!!
I have the allisport 60mm not 50mm and it runs very well, but the bit about better MPG is bull**** I am afraid but who really expects there car/landy/tratter to be cheap to run?

this is a seat leon/ Vw golf 2.0 turbo intercooler on my series 3 200tdi. it cost £24 off ebay including postage. then about £20 for pipes. it just fits between the wings. this coupled with no silencers makes it pick up much better. next step is the fuel pump.

yes, the main support is the two black bits of angle which bolt to the bulkhead and radiator mounting. the expansion tank was changed, bonnet stand removed and i played around with some 2" stainless exhaust pipe with some silicone hoses. i cut a large hole in the bonnet and made a scoop out of a piece of thin aluminium (donor discovery bonnet), curving the edges. its a bit tricky to top up the oil but i use a flexi spout. you can get to most other things and it only takes a few mins to remove.
