Me mates got a td5, his son is 20 and hes been driving for a year, me mate asked for a quote to put his son on the insurance, they wanted over 2 grand...

:eek::eek:

nfu wont insure 18 year old so they told me anyway,
honestly on your own policy you wont insure a defender 90 factory 200tdi for less then 3000 grand

i pay 1850 with a years no claims on my tdi 90
insurance is a rip of but what can you do

You cant do nothing you just got to pay.
You say to them why is it so high because its a very safe car to drive and they turn round and say "its not the safety its the damage they do to other vehicles"
You just can`t win.

try adrian flux...im 22 with 5 years no claims and the cheapest i got offered was nearly £500 everyone else wanted 800 upwards! and that was on a standard disco 1 third party fire n theft!...thats partly why im landy-less at the mo because of the cost of insurance and general running costs of one!

People often moan about high insurance prices but there's a few tricks to get it cheaper. When I was 18, I hated my 1.1 Fiesta and bought a BMW 3 series. Most people told me I'd never be able to insure one. The insurance for it was actually cheaper than the renewal quote for my Fiesta... (£700 in 2005) The reason? Probably because the older Fiesta's are stereotyped to be chav cars, thus, they probably have a higher accident rate.

I also have a friend who had a Mini Cooper S (new shape) as a first car when he was 17. He got his insurance relatively cheap by being a named driver on his parents policy. (the car had to be registered in their name however) IIRC, he paid less than £1000 to insure it, and he still earns NCB's.

It's also worth pointing out that many third party fire & theft policies are often more expensive than fully comprehensive policies. Make sure you get quotes for both. This is pretty much always the case with Direct Line and with some of the other well known insurers. Crazy, I know.

Only use price comparison sites to get a rough idea of who provides the cheapest quotes. Once you've shortlisted some suitable insurers, get a quote with them directly. Most price comparison websites earn commission for each sale, so it's often cheaper to purchase a policy directly with an insurance company.

I had a Disco 2 TD5 when I was 19, from memory I paid £500ish fully comp, 1 years no claims, that was with Adrian Flux

Buy a fiat punto.

Surely a Fiat Panda 4x4 :D

Make sure you don't fall for the stupid 'named driver on parents insurance trick' when it's really you that is the main driver - the insurance companies know this trick and you may save on the premium, but when you have an accident they won't pay out and do you for fraud, you'll get charged with driving without insurance etc etc

Got my first landy at 17 and was about £1600 on me dads. Not to bad reallly. Just gota bite tthe bullet and pay out the first year. Its hard and painfull to see all that money fall out of your pocket. But if your not used to that, why buy land rover?

The Co-Op are cheap for certain land rovers, they don't like Discos or Range Rovers, my Disco is insured with them and I'm having to pay £400! But Series and Defenders can be a lot cheaper, I paid £700 to insure my 110 with them when I was 17 which was only 4 years ago.

tried to help my brother in law (19yr old with no ncb) get quotes on a land rovers. He has spent the last 2 years being on other peoples policies and we have finally talked him into getting his own. Tried the moneysupermarkets etc as adrian flux did not reply after about 3 different emails and couldnt be arsed to try each company direct.

Discos were a big no no (about £3000+ and didnt even try RR classics) although v8 was cheaper than tdi for some reason.
Freelander was about £1800

but my biggest shock was the depender £1500 tpft and if we added my wife as a named driver it went down to £1200. it appears the most desireable (to thieves ;) ) is also one of the cheapest.

Hes now in the process of selling his little chav mobile and going to get a proper landy :D
