Insurance!

After a couple of years behind the wheel of a boring car, it's about time I joined the rest of my family and got a four wheel drive. I looked at a 1988 90 200tdi which I instantly fell in love with and can easily get insured on (I'm 19)

However I phoned my insurers before parting with my cash and mentioned the 4 inch lift it has and all of a sudden they refused to insure me?!

Any advice as to who to go with/what to do?? I'll probably miss out on this current landy but I don't want to be caught out again!

Get rid of the lift kit. Someone will no doubt swap you the standard parts for the lift parts - if they are in good nick.

I haven't bought it yet though!! If I removed the lift kit I'd have to change the tyres too because I doubt they'd fit in the current arches? They're 265x75x16 Cooper Discoverer STT. looks like I'll just have to wait for another 90 to come along...

Try Adrian Flux. They are a broker who provide specialist cover for 4x4s. I'm 23 and they also provided the cheapest quote for me.

Avoid the usual insurers if you intend to drive a 4x4 for what it's actually designed to do. The specialist ones like Adrian Flux cover you for off roading and green laning and many specialist insurers/brokers don't care what mods you put on. In fact, some actually require you to have a modified 4x4, else they won't insure you! The usual insurance companies are often unlikely to insure you for any of those. I remember replacing my wheels on my old Fiesta and when I phoned up Direct Line to declare it, they said that it would invalidate my policy if the wheels were not standard. They wouldn't even allow me to pay extra! I ended up putting my original wheels back on because of it.
