Hi all, I've noticed that all four injectors have been weeping. After removing one of the injectors I found that oil has passed up from the bottom washer and past the injector (the injector and bore was quite full of oil) appearing on the head. I replaced the injectors around 8 months ago. If I had put the bottom copper washers the wrong way around would that cause this problem? As I said before it is all four injectors weeping. If incorrect fitting is to blame which way around should the washers sit? Cheers. (2.5 TD 19j)

Hello,

I believe that you are referring to the main copper sealing washers, the type which have a raised surface on one side and a recess on the other. I have heard numerous reports that it doesn't matter which way around the washers are inserted, but then again I have spoken to a few people (at a diesel injection specialists) who insist that the raised surface should be up against the injector. I've found that sliding the washer down a tie wrap into the hole is the best way forward - it can't possibly flip around. You also need to make sure that both the surface in the cylinder head and the bottom of the injector are exceptionally clean. Tighten the injectors down enough to compress the copper washer, but don't go mad.

Also, there shouldn't be any oil coming up and out of the bores past the injectors full stop. Certainly not unless you have gastronomical engine failure but I think you'd know about that. It's more than likely that the oil is weeping out from your rocker cover gasket and then running down the channels that the injectors sit in. If this is not the case, then it could be that your new injectors have not been assembled correctly, allowing diesel to weep out between the components of the injector body - are they reconditioned?

Hi pos, yes they are recons, from G W Dales in Stoke on Trent. I've had all the injectors out tonight since my first post and on inspection the small coper washers were all fitted with the "dome" towards the injector. The injector bore was well covered in oil and the bottom of the injectors was carboned up and so was the washers. For the time being I took the copper washers out and formed the dome back in them between two small sockets. If you remember a while back now I started a thread about my 90 smoking and drinking fuel excessively, I've turned back the pump slightly which has reduced the smoke but still drinks fuel. Also my turbo seems a bit sluggish aswell. There's always somthing to keep you occupied with a landie! (and poor)
