Hi everyone, after tracking down a few rattles and knocks with the new motor (2003 Disco TD5) I'm now under the impression the one or more of my injectors are rattling. I've had a read through a few of the previous posts which once again have proved invaluable so many thanks to all for taking the time to help others. The question I have is this. My engine feels slightly out of balance on low revs/ tickover, could the problem with the injectors rattling be causing this imbalance ? I've checked the crankshaft pulley and it seems to be in good condition, I've replaced the aux' belt tensioner and checked all the other pulleys and removed the viscious fan. It's nothing really bad, the engine ticks over sweetly, it just feels like the engine is slightly out of balance. The motor otherwise is brilliant and pulls like a train. Many thanks for any help. Carlos.

sounds like you need to stop farting about with it, it's a landy .. it'll shake, rattle and hopefully not roll :D

As said TD5 does sound slightly out of balance and a bit of a rattle is normal. You'll need to compare to others to be able to say if it's unnaturally worse.

I know you said you checked the crankshaft pulley. But.

Have a closer look at it. Has it failed and been welded? Rather than replaced :scratching_chin:

Thanks for the replies, the welded pulley does sound like a good place to start, I had my last Td5 for 8 years and dont remember the engine feeling like this, Ive a spare pulley so will try that first. Thanks everyone.

The other thing to try is remove the fan. Remember it unscrews in the normal direction ie anti-clockwise.

If that doesn't cure it, try running the engine without the fanbelt - any better? Obviously don't drive the vehicle like this, just run the engine on tickover for a brief period to identify any changes.

These are just a couple of tests to help identify if any of the 'ancilliaries' are causing the problem.

Quick update, I checked the pulley and all seems fine there, the engine mounts look good aswell. I've had the fan off for the past month now cause it was shot, I adjusted the injectors as per instructions and this has made quite a difference. I think I can nearly live with it now, lol. Thanks for the advice guys. Oh and just one other question, how often on average does the air compressor kick in, mine seems to kick in everytime there's a change in ride height, ie, parking on a kerb, or getting in/ out. It's not loosing air overnight just seems to run a bit too often. Thanks.

If it's kicking in only when the ride height changes it sounds normal to me.

Quick update to this post, I've replaced the viscious fan with a wonderful replacement from Britpart which is getting binned due to being absolutely crap. The rattle on the top end of the engine seems to be getting slightly worse so thinking that one of my injectors might be knackered. If you can understand this, it sounds like an exhaust leak inside the exhaust manifold if that makes sense. Its not leaking but makes the same noise, sort of. I'm need to get it plugged in to nanocom or similar to find out what's going on, I'm based in Brighouse, West Yorks'. Does anyone local'ish to me have access to a reader that could run a diagnostic at a reasonable rate please. I've had it plugged in at my local garage but no one knows if there's a problem or not. It's such a nice car but It's driving me bloody mad now. Many thanks in advance...
