Injector pump fault

I've had a intermittent problem with my p38 dse where there seems to be no power for a few seconds then is better. This happens maybe once a week.

Anyway I took it to my local I independent garage and he plugged in his diagnostics. And cleared a injector pump fault.

After driving some more the intermittent fault happened again. To it back to the garage again and the fault has come back.

So my question is given the cost of replacing the injector pump is there anything I can test or do to ensure that it is a mechanical fault with the pump.

And ideas gratefully received.
 
Dunno I asked but say it doesn't give codes. Can't remember what system they have. But he said it's updated daily from London. I have a Namocom will check what that says tomorrow.
 
Ok, it might be the fuel quantity solenoid or your needle lift sensor to start with do they sound like what you friend was talking about?
 
Nanocom not working f33 fused. Just wanted to check fuses 1 - 5 are spares

There are spare fuses to the right hand side of the engine bay fuse box fuse 33 should be 5 amps. Fuses 1 to 5 are not in the engine bay. Unless i misunderstand what you are asking.

Here are some reading after driving abou 15 miles. It taken while stopped and idling. Timing mod. Of 76 I thought was a tad high. From reading other threads should be about 50 -+ 5. Modulation is a tad high static slightly retarded. Chain stretch. As for the invalid fault. It is happening on cranking at 56 RPM don't know why that should be happening at that speed. Fuel flow out of range is feedback pot telling ECU that quantity servo is fuelling higher or lower than that normally associated with the RPM/engine load. Could be an impending quantity servo problem. Refurbed pumps are around the £600.00 mark.
 
So are you saying that timing chain needs replacing and fip needs a referb

If the pump timing has never been redone before 76% modulation is not a lot of stretch. The fuel quantity fault could just be down to a bad connection on cranking. If it was saying that at normal engine speeds then you would have a major problem. The trick is noticing it says "Invalid fault". If your car has done upwards of 100,000 miles and the chains have never been checked it's time to do it. A busted chain is big trouble. Pump cost was just for info.

Would you recommend me getting the cam, pump and crank sprocket done at the same time?

The local garage quoted me £750 + 2.5 hr labour for the fip. Was looking at secondhand ones for £170. But wanted to be sure that it was a pump issue first. I think the timing chain is a good place to start. I'm guessing that if he changed the pump he would have spotted the chain was stretched. Cheers wammers

There are two chains lower one that drives the pump and also an upper one that drives the camshaft off the pump sprocket. When i changed mine bottom chain was worn but reasonable, top chain was close to breaking on a couple of links. Changing them is quite a big job. Cam sprocket and pump sprocket are easy to get hold of, crank sprocket is not. See BMW part number in my "How to". Injection pump from diesel Jones are about £595 exchange. 2.5 hrs is a bit tight for changing a pump.
