Hi Troops

I think my P38 has a leaking deisel injector as it's difficult to start it just winds over and over I've tried heating the glow plugs two or three time to see if that helps it does a bit but not much its even difficult to start when warm but when it does finally start there is a cloud of black smoke but it doesn't run unevenly at all so I'm after some help if it is an injector is there a way to find out which one or am I way off base with my diagnosis

Any Help will be much appreciated

Thanks

Take a gander at the clear pipe from the Fuel Filter (on the side of the engine)....

If it has air bubbles in it, it could be from leaking Spill Pipes (or leak-off pipes - whichever you prefer).

These have a tendancy to split, but are cheap to replace. check these pipes first.

First make sure the glow plugs are working. Then check the spill pipes are sound. If you have dripping injectors only thing to do is take them out and get them serviced. Get the pump timing checked.

Remember that these can be difficult to start when warm for totally different reasons than when they're cold so concentrate first on getting it firing up when cold.

Do the leak-off pipes first because it's easy and cheap and whilst you're looking at pipework you could check that the in-tank pump is doing it's thing.

Unless you know that the glow plugs are reasonably new and a decent make then you'd be as well to change them. Be very careful if you're removing old glow plugs, you don't want to snap them. They sometimes come out more easily if the engine's warm, if you can get it to start !!!

One leaky injector will not stop it starting. First port of call is glowplugs & glowplug relay given that when it does start there is a lot of smoke indicating plenty of fuel.

The BeCM has to shakehands (sync) with the engine ECU before it will allow it to start. At times the two ECUs loss the handshake code so the BeCM will not allow the cAr to be started as it thinks it is not the right car. It is an antithedt precaution!

I think (others will corerct me if I am wrong) the little Engine Light on the Dash either remains illuminated after the initial bulb check, or it fails to come on atall not sure which....

The only option to re-sync is with a BBS Syncmate or a diagnostic computer.

The petrols loss sync regularly, the diesels not so much....

Do the Glow Plug check as per Datateks instruction first, as a syncmate is around £70-80 or so, so cheaper to check the plugs first.

Changed the glow plugs starts first turn of the key just goes to prove you can't trust some local garages not going to mention names at this time will wait and see what they are going to do about the crap glow plugs they sent me about a month ago and the tried to blame leaking injectors along with other things

A result, and someone who comes on to tell us. Nice one mate.

I said I would let you know how things worked out and don't worry I'm just at good at admitting to my f**k ups as well so watch this space
