Can anyone tell me if my start inhibitor switch is really knackered or not? The car will start in any gear not just “P” and “N” so something is wrong The reversing lights don’t work either but I can’t be sure yet that the switch is the cause of this.
A continuity check on the bench shows:
1. Plunger uncompressed
· Continuity on solenoid circuit
· No Continuity on reversing light circuit
2. Plunger compressed
· No Continuity on solenoid circuit
· Continuity on reversing light circuit
I would have expected non continuity in both circuits when the plunger is uncompressed and continuity when it was compressed but I don’t know what’s going on inside the gearbox and what the various trigger mechanism’s are.
The replacement switches are the not the cheapest things on the market so I want to be sure that it is the switch that’s the problem.
If it’s not the switch is there anything else that it could be?

Thanks James.
The switch was removed from the car before the checks were made.
But thinking about it there must be 2 different off/on situations. The switch has only 2 positions, depressed or non depressed. If both solenoid and reversing lights can be activated at the same time then it would be possible to start the car in reverse. So first indications are that the switch is OK . Or is my logic flawed?
Is there anything else that I should be looking at?
