Have you had to spend a lot of money to replace your Freelander TD4's geabox or intermediate reduction drive unit? If so, I want to hear from you because Land Rover and its dealers are pretending there is no problem with these units.
Earlier this year I had to spend £2500 to keep my 53 Freelander TD4 going when both its gearbox and IRD were diagnosed as dead at 4 years old and 60,000 miles, just one week after the expiry of the vehicle's Land Rover Assured warranty.
We all know that gearboxes shouldn't die at that age but neither Land Rover customers services or the supplying dealer were the least bit interested in helping - they just said I was unlucky. So I had the repairs carried out by an independent and very expert Land Rover specialist. All they made out of it was the £210 labour charge and it grieves me to think that Land Rover profitted from supplying the required parts. The independent specialist tells me that they have had to replace quite a lot of these Freelander gearboxes, and I've heard the same from other repairers too. So I want to find out how big the problem is and what it has cost Freelander owners.
I want to know how old the vehicle was when the gearbox and/or IRD failed, what was it's mileage and what was the cost of the repair. Please post that information to this thread and/or email me.
Thanks in anticipation of replies and if you haven't had the problem yourself but know someone who has, please tell them about this post and get them to respond.

Sounds like your car hasn't been checked properly at the services, as they should have picked up on the faulty VCU before it damaged the IRD. If I were you I'd check that your crankcase breather valve/filter assembly has been changed every 12,000 miles & if not change it now otherwise you can add a new turbo to the mix in the not too distant future.
