Hi

I'm only getting around 320 miles (my workings make this to be about 18mpg) on a full tank on my '02 TD5 ES with 78k on the clock. I don't drive particularily heavily and on a recent run up to the lakes and back (300 miles round trip) I had the cruise set to 70 the whole way there and back and it only did 390 on the tank. Nobody in the car but me.

Most people on here are reporting at least 450 and some over 600!

I have not blanked off the EGR, but am planning to soon. However, I'm guessing that with my economy so low there might be a problem somewhere. Could anybody point me in the right direction in what to look for?

All the filters (air/fuel/oil) and oil itself, including in autobox and transfer were recently changed. Also, I havn't really noticed any smoke either.

I Would say the engine seems slightly down on power and engine sounds slightly "louder". Maybe its just me being paranoid but there's a hill near my house and I'm sure it used to whizz up it. Now with foot hard down the engine will rev to 3500 and stay there but it will struggle to get past 40mph. Used to have a lot of trouble with the turbo hoses on my old 300tdi but I can't see anything obviously wrong them.

On the TD5 there is something called a MAP, which is a sensor and when clogged can give similar symptoms.

Find it, clean it and you may find a significant improvement.

Re mpg, we get about 33mpg from our TDi300's, BUT, we cruise at 60-65mph. This makes a big difference as the aerodynamics of these vehicles are horrendous !!!

Good luck

I think U have faulty airflow sensor and a fuel leak from fuel pressure regulator valve.

Hi I have tryed most things to improve my TD5 GS Auto (2000) egr valve blanked off that didnt make any improvement new air flow meter kenlow fan new injector wiring loom K&N filter new fliters and oil in engine gearbox ,transfer box and axles, all that was over a few months and no marked improvement but then I got hold of a piggy back wiring tuning chips and that did make a improvement of 5-7 mpg and it was loads better to drive. But with the chip you do have to drive with a light throttle to make any difference but there is no need to drive with a heavy foot because it is loads more responsive and a dream to drive.the other thing is the sooner you get upto 50mph and the auto box locks off then it will just cruise along.

Hi
I live on a hill and like you noticied it took longer to change gear etc
upshot i asked my local inidependant and he advised i change Gear box oil and filter as when this become blocked it prevents smooth operation of the gearbox. I had it done and now back to normal improved MPG and also changes gear a lot smoother. It something i never notice had got so bad with it being a gradual deteriation. Cost about £60 inc Labour
