Hi,

Is there anything I can do to improve the fuel consumption of my '02 TD5 auto?

It's averaging about 18mpg at the moment (~320 miles from full to light on), I'm sure it should be doing at least low 20s.

Its had new fuel and air filters but judging by what mpg others on this forum say they are getting, I'm well below par. I'm not really sure what else to check for - engine runs and pulls fine.

Sorry, no ideas but do agree you should be doing better than that. I seem to average around 450miles per tank in my 01 TD5 Auto.

Take EGR off, de-cat front pipe, air filter? tyres? run at a higher tyre pressure, fuel pressure regulator leaking? (smell of diesel and dripping down left hand side of engine block) MAF sensor, there is also another sensor on the inlet manifold that's easy to clean and usely caked up from the EGR valve.

Should keep you busy for a bit, and if all that fails as discool says go easy on the gas pedal.The TD5 is a very free reving injun. I can get nearly 30mpg out of mine!

The first and most important element of econmicam running is driving style. Bearing in mind that you are driving a 2200kg vehicle with only 136bhp the car is underpowered by modern family car stds, so there can be a tendancy to over-drive the car and the result is heavy fuel consumption. You need to make your own evaluation on that one.

However, there are a few mods that can help the Disco to run more fuel efficiently:

De-EGR - this involves replacing the EGR valve with a blank tube - particularly useful on post 2001 cars. £30;

De-Cat - this involves replacing the catted exhaust downpipe for one without a cat in it. Noticable performance and mpg gains here. £65.

Also check your tyre pressures regularly - front 31 psi and rear 36psi unless heavy loads or towing.

Also considor a remap of the ECU - improves performance and can improve mpg if you don't thrash it.

I get about 30mpg on average from my '99 TD5 auto and my last one, a 2002 auto did about the same.

Cheers
Dave
