Improving Fuel Consumption

Hey Guys

I am trying to improve the fuel consumption of my p reg 300tdi. I'm getting around 28mpg, but know I could do better with some tweaks and mods.

I drive fairly gently, averaging around 60-65 on motorways and stick to speed limits around town.

I don't think this car has been looked after too well in it's time, so it's up to me to get it up to parr. What can you guys suggest?

I'd consider taking it back to the guy you bought it from and get him to fix all the faults he sold it to you with before you get your hands too dirty with it.

That's a bit strange, I imagine it was bought privately and even if it was from a dealer, its pretty much "sold as seen" which means any faults, minor or major, so long as they're typical of the age and mileage of the car, are fair game. I don't think you can expect perfection from a 13+ year old car.

TBH 28mpg is about right. For info, I get about 26mpg. I think a lot of it comes down to driving style. If you drive quite slowly, smoothly (boring, basically) and change gear at low revs, etc you can stretch out fuel economy by a couple of MPG.

Thanks guys. I've read different things about tweakingfuel pumps to improve performance. Does this work in reverse and help improve fuel economy also?

until you've sorted out the overheating don't start tweaking.

have you removed the egr valve and replaced the catt pipe for a de catt pipe if it already hasn't been done mite improve things a little.

Isn't the book figure something like 30mpg? Book figures tend to over exaggerate a little bit. If I'm right, then 28 mpg sounds about right.

Have you looked into the whole biodiesel thing? I looked into it myself and decided not to bother with it for my FL TD4. I'm not sure about the feasibility of it when talking about the Disco 300 TDI though. Worth looking into.

28mpg sounds reasonable tbh...you wont get the book figure as its done under conditions that arent found anywhere in the known universe apart from car manufacturers test tracks.

If you tweek and fiddle about you will pay for it further down the line...just drive more aware, smoother gear changes at lower revs, check tyre pressures..change oils...

Really? I think if it is sold with a coolant leak, and you are just told that it needs topping up every 2-3 days, rather than that there is a leak that needs fixing, that under the Sale of Goods act the seller will have a hard time arguing that it is fit for purpose.
