Hi I've only just joined having bought a defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon last week. My Landy only came with one set of keys and one electronic imobiliser fob and I need to get a spare. Does anyone know of a source which doesn't charge extortionate land rover prices?

On a separate issue I have a problem with the rear door lock which will lock from inside the car but the key wont release from the lock barrel from outside. Any suggestions?
I did consider replacing the three barrels but wasn't sure if that was going to sort the problem.
Thanks Dave

I bought an extra fob on eBay for £3.99 and programmed it to the the ECU my self. If you dont know anybody with a Nanocom or Hawkeye diagnostics gizmo to do this then you will need to get it registered to the ECU. Last time I enquired at my local LR dealer they wanted £45 to do this. Any decent independant LR garage should be able to do it for less.

Thanks Shifty (and Dave). I have the exact same problems on my recently acquired TD5.

Regarding the fob, mine has two buttons - a large one which locks/unlocks the front doors and a small one (which doesn't seem to do anything). It also has a blue LED that lights when activated (one on the fob and one that flashes on the dash). Is this system likely to be OEM or an after-market jobby?

Thanks!

Sounds like an aftermarket jobby to me. Standard LR fob should have two buttons. One lock and one unlock. Red flashing LED in speedo is the immobiliser indicator.

You got a pic of the fob ?
I know there are some places where they will copy the fob for you without having to go near the car

Thanks Shifty - a useful link, duly bookmarked for future use.

Just a thought: being an '01 Defender 90 TD5, I wonder if mine would have had remote central locking as standard or was it an option? If so, I wonder if my after-market fob has somehow been twinned with the OEM alarm/immobiliser ECU?

I shall sally forth, making great haste (etc) and check behind the speedo to see if the alarm/immobiliser ECU is actually where it would probably have been fitted (if indeed it was .... are you still with me?), then I'll contact the company in the link for their advice on how to proceed.

Bit of a bummer to have to send them the ECU, but it'll be worth it I suppose.

Ah the joys, etc .....

Cheers!!

Central locking on Defenders was/is an optional extra. Even on the CSWs it was not standard. Not to sure about the new ones though.

The company I posted the link to is not the only one doing what they do but I had the used fob I got from eBay refurbed by them and was very pleased with their sevice. The price has gone up since I had mine done though.

UPDATE

Right ... it seems that my Landy is fitted with an aftermarket Autowatch alarm/immobiliser. With the help of my friend Google, I have located a supply of remote fobs (at £40 a go from Autowatch) and have downloaded the relevant instructions for programming it etc. All I need to do now is to find the alarm unit itself which seems to have been hidden cleverly in a not-very-accessible position in the bowels of my Landy, remove its cover and read off the code typed onto a sticky label somewhere within ... then I must laboriously (and with no doubt considerable stress ) follow the convoluted instructions to set up my second bleeper.

I suppose I'm a bit happier now, but I think I may have to warn my cat to remain at a safe distance in the next few days .....

Hey ho.

PS. Dave (DRW58), I hope you don't mind my hi-jacking your thread, and also that you soon solve your own particular fob problem :)
