More than likely due to age, and depends on the inertia of "bump". All it does is unlock the doors if locked and activates the hazards, switching off and on the ignition switch resets, info on this system is in the owners handbook.

Lots of info in the owners handbook things you may not have known.
Down load a copy for the later D1s from the LR site Topix otherwise you will have to purchase one from the likes of e-bay.
