Way out in the styx
Im looking to buy just a straight LR 90 ie pre 1990. What are the things that i have to look out for. i know about the Turbo diesel engine prob. ie the bearings on the big end wear alot faster and although tough are now getting to the milege point at which all the engine internals start to break. As im looking for a 90 to be in bad shape bt mechanically sound. or more so the engine to be sound anything else doesnt really matter. although the more intact the better iv got about £2500 MAX so what sort of 90 will i get.

once again sorry for the stupid question. also petrol or diesel doesnt matter but i dont really want the turbo D.

to summerise what pitfalls should i look out for?? thanks Lads and Ladies!!

Reet then do a search there's a fred on here that'll tell you all you want to know and more, think It's called buying a second hand 90. Secondly the rumours about the 2.5 turbo engine being unreliable is a load of bollocks get one thats been looked after an there'll be nowt wrong with it. You say the engine is the main bit to be sound As far as I'm concerned I'd rather replace the engine than the bulkhead and chassis. And you say you really don't want a Turbo diesel, is this cos of the unreliability bit or for the performance, if it's the unreliability see above, if it's the performance there not that bad after all it's a 90 designed for off roading, if you want performance get a fireblade or summat. Two an a narf grand should get you something decent if you take your time and look around, but you'll never get away from the fact your buying a vehicle thats bin used and abused and is getting on a bit. Don't ferget to do a search on here.

O aye I fergot to say hello.

hi. for a 2.5k you should get somthing a bit smart acctually. i would value my 90td at about 2k and its not that bad. no rust any where and the only real issue with it is im slowly losing sycro between 4th and 3rd. i got mine from a local dealer as trade in for 600 notes with no tax and not much mot. its just failed its mot on passenger door not able to be opened from the inside. back in on friday (easy fix!) so far including taxing it for 6 months and £50 for mot it stands me in at £910:D . so look about this one was a bargain and only needed about a weekends work to get it road worthy. there are bargains out there so hang on and see what comes up e.g. i recently saw a 300tdi on a p plate for £2495 that needed a rear x.member. ;)

i picked up my 1984 90 2.5 n/a diesel for £1900. its in pretty solid shape, chassis is good, bulkhead seems good, rear cross member is going a bit. engine seems fine. ive been tidying it up over the last 12 months ands its starting to take shape :) like grunt said, dont expect to much from 90's of this age. they have more than likely passed through many hands over the years.

you might be able to squeeze an early 200tdi for 2.5k though. worth considering.

dam it grunt, i'd a got in first if i could find the right feckin pictures first time!

Cheers for the quick reply everyone.... not many forum members up around this time ha ha.... @Grunt: im after a banged up farm vehicle as all i'll do with it is work on the farm and try a bit of green laning. Im not looking for performance really just something tough rugged to get me around for the week then fill up. and i mite be wrong (Fred) but the diesel NA is a slight tiny bit better on saving fuel than the TD or Petty. and fair enough about the fact that if i find a TD thats been properly serviced and looked after then i would expect no probs, but £2500 can only get me so far. Should be going to look for one in the coming week after iv been paid... and yes maybe replacing the engine is easier than faffing with the bulkhead and mostly chassis lol

Thanks again guys keep some replys on the go if anyone can add to it!

CHEERS!

just dont rush into anything 2.5k spent well is alot a landy but spent badly wont be. its the difference between an expensive d plate 2.5n/a and a cheap tdi on a h-j-k plate. choice is your i know what i'd go for espeacially if your not frantic about dents or minor restoration work.

What would you do tom69/grunt or anyone reading this. 2.5k MAX to spend on a 90 what you get. im looking at late 1980s or early 90s..... WHAT SHOULD I DO???? what would you do??

cheers

personally id want to find a good 200tdi 90 advertised for 2750 - 3000 and flash the cash and make it clear that you have cash you want to spend! today!

just have a good look and don't get carried away as has been said. there is a bit of a differance between a tdi and n/a if you are doing any towing on the road the tdi would be better but n/a is a good engine just a bit weedy on the top end. I know I've got one. will be going for a tdi engine cause I will have a b****y caravan to tow about shortly.

2500 quid should get you a pretty decent pre tdi 90. Problem is there are plenty for sale out there and the price doesn't reflect the condition a lot of the time so you've got to have a good look and decide for yourself if you think it's worth it. My 1990 110 2.5td cost me 2500 but it came with a set of BFG muds, a decent winch and a very recent engine rebuild. I wouldn't have paid so much otherwise.

I have to say I'm quite impressed with my 2.5td. I've done a fair bit of towing lately and it's done well. Towed a 2 ton site cabin no problem and shifted my series 3 on a trailer without a grumble:D

Cheers for all the replys guys, nice set of views i can ponder on. I'll be looking tomorrow, im gonna go for a straight NA diesel pre 1990. Nice and simple also iv got me eye on one for £1800 so nice bit of dosh left for the refurb. cheers guys i'll post back when my dream starts!!

Speak very soon!
