is the x5 rust coming from condensation on unpainted surfaces?
it seems cars hit a peak for quality and durabilty in the 90's and now the manufactuers have realised that it doent matter how good the car is 10 years or more after they sell it.
Shame really as some bloody well built cars came out in that period and it would be nice for people like us if it continued.

It seems to be a mix of condensation within panels and poor steel. The appear like blisters but when opened it is a can of worms.

Not just any old worms - ultimate driving worms...
One of my old bosses had a big old Merc (can't remember what class) on a 51 plate and it had more cosmetic rust around the arches and door bottoms than an old N-Reg Escort I was cutting around in at the time, would have been about 2 years ago. It was horrific.

97-2002ish Mercs rot like Alfasuds in a salt bath. Still, if it has a shiny three pointed star on the bonnet some mug will stump up the readies - even if you can buy the same car with a Chrysler badge for half the dosh.

The Merc. Most probably using all of the scrap steel that we export to South Africa.
It was an E-Class. I did hear that the steel was sourced form Russia.

Take it from me as an EX Kia of bolton (horwich) spanner chucker that its got a full warrenty and read the small print on the 7 year bull**** marketing skam that they advertise... all is not what you think.... id get the diesel version if any and if you like being sat in a "plastic" bowl then its defo for you. think you might regret gettin rid of the rangie but either way gooood luck and sorry to see you leave. :5bseeya:Doesn't all the v8s have EAS which has plenty of it's own issues, don't know about the BMW build quality on the x5 as it comes out very low on the survey's. Anyhow everyone to thier own especially since I am contemplating a v6 3.5 Sorento, but have not decided as I do like my Rangie.

Cheers for that Mike, have not decided yet and won't until the spring but spoken to some that have the Sorento and they think they are great motors but I also fancy the Disco 3 but the Sorento knocks the spots off it in the reliability survey's. Only reason I am thinking of changing is that all going well the rangie will hit 160K in the next couple of weeks, I will probably run it until it starts to cost more money than its worth though as it has been a great motor. 18K miles in 18 months, set of discs and pads, fuel pump and regular servicing along with some electrical niggles, not bad.
