I'm not a happy bunny

H.L. failed her MOT today; mainly on the brakes. I've got no idea of everything that's necessary to put her right and at the moment I'm too unhappy even to start thinking about working out how much it's all going to cost:
She needs new brake pipes all round.
The front discs are excessively pitted; can these be polished or must they be replaced?
The o/s R wheel cylinder is leaking, presumably this would have to be replaced?
Excessive play in both drag link ball joints (AKA drop-arm ball-joints?) - can these be adjusted, or is it replacement?
And the handbrake (which seemed fine after I adjusted it yesterday, and was OK driving to the garage this morning) somehow became "locked on" - when I tried to drive her away, she wouldn't pull forward, and I had to get under her and slacken it right off

Oh, yeah, and the o/s windscreen wiper blade is insecure!! That I can sort out!

If anyone knows approximately how much all that little lot's likely to cost, to give me some idea of how many limbs or vital organs I might have to sell, and whether it's within the scope of an amateur attempts-at-spanner-wielding girly, or whether I'll need to pay someone to do it I'd be grateful.
Right now, I think I need some 'comfort cake' or chocolate or ice cream, or preferably all 3 :(

Sorry to hear your tale of woe. Where are all the regulars rushing to your aid?

Don't know all the prices but all the bits should be do-able on a diy basis.

Take it as a great opportunity to get to know your landy better.:)

She needs new brake pipes all round. Bit fiddly - but not too difficult.
The front discs are excessively pitted; can these be polished or must they be replaced? replace with new - pretty cheap from Paddocks.

Bring it over here, Janie, I'll have a look.
Gt the kids this week-end so giz a call before hand.
Still got my number?
Radius arm ball-joints are about a fiver each, dead easy job if you have the right tool, and I do.
Brake pipes, with a flaring kit £15 worth of copper pipe and a couple of quids worth of fittings you can replace anything.... again, have all the kit here, and can show you how to use it.
Brake discs, WILL need replacement, they can be ground, but not worth it; new discs are actually cheaper than brake pads!
That'sthe niggly bit, cos when you fit the new pads you find the pistons in the calipers are pitted and wreck the seals when you push them back in.
Caliper overhaul, from memory, £5 a piston, x4 per front caliper, x2 per rear caliper works out at 12 slugs, £60, and to fit them, overhaul kits, which are fif faffing ruddy things and you need to buy about two kits per caliper for the retaining rings that you'll bend trying to fit them, are about £250 a go, so add eight of them adds another tenner.
Might as well add some new flex hoses while you are at it for about £30 to do them all.
Discs, I seem to recal are about £20 a rotor, pads about £25 a set, and you'll want some new hand-brake shoes, which are probably about another £20, and again, not a difficult job.
New discs on the front, new ball-joints, new hand-brake shoes and new copper brake pipes, off the top of my head, ball-park £80-£100 ish, bul off on the discs; if you need to do 'all-round' new pads and caliper overhaul, then you can add another £50 for the rear discs, £50 for pads, and about a ton to completely do all the calipers; WORST CASE, £250..... but with a bit of jigging we could probably get away closer to bottom end rather than top, if you are REALLY short...... :)
Done all these jobs before and even written some how-to's on most of them; see here:-
A Bit of Flair!
Take a Brake!
Bring it over, lets have a look, see what we can do, check some prices on Craddocs or round the corner at Round Tower Spares, and let you loose in my toy-box!

you will need to cut n flare it but if you cut it to length and flutter your eyelashes at your local garage i'm sure he will flare it for you ;) i will see if i have any other bits that will be of use

She can cut'n' flare it herself G
I'll hand her the blue box of bits and show her the vid, give her the RAVE disc and leave her to get on with it!
That's the 'deal' BTW Janie, I look, I advise, I lend... YOU do the hard work.....
But then, THAT's how you want it isn't it?
You have PM BTW.

janie when you say brake pipes do they mean the hoses or the pipes would have thought it was the hoses . might be me but sounds like it to me

damsel in distress saved by the LZ boys, like a fairytale lol:D hope you can get it all sorted DG and it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg, or any other vital organs;)

I will put a package in the post to you in the morning DG ;) it is likely that it will be too big for your box

Ooooh-errr!!! I'll anticipate receiving a reasonable-sized package then!! ;)
Thanks again!! :D

I've been reading Tef's extremely comprehensive guides that he linked above, and it doesn't seem too daunting now :) and the thought that I will be 'babysat' through the process is great! :D

Group hug!! :5bgrouphug:
