Hello i have Freelander 2 2006 td4 hse automatic
Yesterday in service i change timming belt , water pump and alternator belt , my serviser took off batery for 4-5 hours and now i can`t start my car.
Starting and stop about one second , on dash board says zündschloss steckt on german ... i translate and is meaning .
-ignition lock stuck.
Can u help me what is the problem?

Is the steering wheel free to turn, or is it locked?

There's a software update available to sort out some issues, but I'm sure the column fails regularly too.

shouldnt have anything to do with a battery disconnect tho?

I've heard that disconnecting the battery for a few minutes can sometimes cure the problem. Maybe the battery disconnection is a red herring? It's possible that the steering lock got engaged while the work was being carried out. If the steering lock gets stuck, a warning is displayed and the vehicle won't start. I've recently had a similar issue with our Ford Kuga. The screen flashed up a message saying something about the column being locked and it wouldn't start. Wiggling the steering wheel freed it off and the car started just fine. It's only done it once in 40K miles and was probably attributed to the tyre being turned against a kerb when the car was parked.

Yes battery disconnection is on a red herring , the steering is not lock is free , but vehicle won`t start and display zündschloss steckt and the key can`t start it.
:( i try to disconnect and put new baterry but same error and same problem

what type of working ? did you know ?

The German translation to English doesn't really work.

I suspect it's the column lock at fault though. The column lock has a position switch that tells the BCU if the column lock is engaged or not. What can happen is the lock pin gets damaged by the slot in the column into which it fits. This damage then stops the column lock from retracting fully and not switching the disengaged switch. The BCU flags this as a locked column and prevents the engine from starting.

Sometimes tapping the column lock assembly while the key is inserted can cause the lock pin to fully retract and allow the engine to start.
It's definitely worth a try as it only takes a few minutes to remove the column plastic trim and give the lock a few taps with a light hammer.

I don't have a how to guide. The column trim comes off easy enough with a few Torx screws.
The lock assembly that needs tapping looks like this.
