As the title says - how do you identify axles?

I bought a rolling chassis about a year ago, but I don't know what the axles were from so I don't really know what age they are.

I reckon they are from a TDI, I would like to know an identifying mark or something so that I can get the right parts for them.

you carnt really identify them without knowing what ur looking at there is normally a code on them so i dont know if you could searh somewere and use that code

There's sposed ter be a serial number on em somewhere, never seen one though.

Discs or drums (rear one)?
3 or 4 bolt diff input flange?
Has the stub axle got a slot or a flat for the hub nut lock-washer to locate on?

OK - I am replacing the discs on Saturday so I will provide some photos.

Its just so I can put together a document which lists what is what for getting spares.

Both axles are discs and 4 bolt inputs.

Now I think about it, its only the front axle that is a problem as the rear has discs on it and as per paddocks it seems there are only one set of things under this axle (then I can tranfer the part no. to Craddocks and get good bits!).

I need to know if my axle is pre 1993 or after as according to the PDF you sent me there are parts for two types, so things are looking up. Thanks for that by the way!

I will know if there is a flat for locating the washer on Satuday.

Yup thanks, its pretty good that guide. Will come in handy for lots of stuff. Just need to work out what I have, so I will see what is in there on Saturday.

Start with intro redbow from Newcastle . Having same probs trying to find out the age of the front axle 4bolt input cut out for locking washer got the numbers starting with 22l any help thanks

I recently learnt that post 1994 axles have bush cups in the shock mounts at the rear. May help narrow it down.
