Series 3 ID needed, long bonnet but no Stage1 model

Looks to be a full width rad with intercooler. Which might be why they moved the panel forward to clear the steering relay, as it wouldn’t fit otherwise. There was also a phase of putting Defender bonnets on Series motors. So might just have been for the look. The lower dash is also 90 and the VIN plate is in an odd place and also not of Series vintage. Gearbox has the difflock leaver behind the gearstick, so probably from a 90 or converted.

Can’t see the turbo. But guess it has one as it has the intercooler. Guessing it might be low mounted as per a Disco.

This set up with the 5 speed box will be full time 4 wheel drive without the benefit of CV's in the front axle [ unless it has an early 110 4 x 2 transferbox, very rare ]
It does work but steering can feel strange at times on the lock.
The only way to use the free wheel hubs would be to drive in diff lock and that would be pointless.

If that was mine, I wouldn't be happy with the air cleaner. Either the location or the actual nature of it.

Well, that doesn't look like a Disco gearbox. Can't really understand why they moved the grille panel.

Make more room to get the much larger rad and intercooler in, and so the bonnet catches shut.

you can get a 2wd kit that fits in center diff if gives 4wd when you select diff lock its what i fit to 5 speed conversions
 
My 2.5 TD had a paper element filter that had the engine breather pipe fitted on the air inlet side before the element,bloody silly as the element soon became contaminated.:rolleyes: When the old motor started breathing heavy I i just fed the pipe into the chassis.

Thinking about it, so did mine. The oil bath cleaners ended with S3. But they are much cheaper to refill with oil than the paper element ones.
I always ran my 2.5 TD open to atmosphere as well, the engine was in good nick, but no point in taking any chances.
 
I would be looking to sort the centre diff / 2wd issue to cut loads on the front axle ujs. I know how mine kicks when paking in low range. Is it possible to fit cv joints by cutting down 90 shafts?
 
Have heard that running a turbo engine with an oil filled air cleaner is not a good idea but don't know.

Not a problem according to several that have done it, including @lynall .

Wouldn't surprise me if that was spread by manufacturers wanting to sell air filters at a tenner a pop.

The turbochargers on old Landrovers run fairly low boost pressures.
 
Thanks for all the comments and advice! I talked to previous owner and he insisted it was a Disco gearbox. Anyway, first thing is to look into the air filter issue and then understand the all time 4-wheel drive CV issue. Besides that, the brakes seem to be a mess and need attention. Once again, Thanks guys!
 
Air filters are over rated. A bit of fine chicken wire is more than adequate to stop pigeons being sucked in.

My first series went three years with no oil in the bath. I thought it was a vortex filter :oops:

It is supposed to have a bit of cyclonic action The air swirls round at the top, get the big bits out, and is then drawn down and into the oil bath surrounding the mesh in the base.

Most of the time, you will get away without oil in the wet British climate. Won't work so well in the Sahara, though.
