I'm convinced me tratter prefers posh diesel.
At £1.50 a litre it ain't cheap though.
I know it'd prolly run on chip fat, so am I deluded (tratter ownership aside, that is).
If yer monitor the soot level on a Freelander 2 fitted with a dpf... Posh diesel takes longer to fill it up. It's as if posh diesel creates less soot. They also say they put more cleaning ingredients in it.

There's quite a mixed view ont web. I follow the theory of what Haynes ses. Every 4th fill-up put posh fool in if yer dun't want to pay the eggstra every time yer fill up.

Premium diesel is much better for DPFs.

If you want to avoid DPF issues, either as you suggest, or use cheap diesel, and put a bottle of DPF cleaner/regenerator in the tank every few fills.

With older diesels, pre about 1990, it makes little difference.

Mornin all. Comma Diesel Magic evry 3rd tank for me with ornery Esso fool. Not easy to get the posh gear round yer. Tis cookin day fer me, pot roast brisket in one pan, pheasant, leek an spud soup in tother. Better get going.
