Hi All,

I have a 98 Discovery 3.9ltr v8i Auto, and its up for its MOT fairly soon, I don't normally worry about stuff like this but I know how tight the government is being with cars like the Discovery and im worried about the emisions being high and it failing its MOT.

So what can I do to lower the emisions being pumped out of my exhaust???.

Thanks very much

John

Change the HT leads if it hasn't been done recently. The better the spark the cleaner the combustion. Be careful how you put them back - the positioning on a V8 can be important. Always do them one at a time and put them back in the same place. When I ran petrol cars, I found that leads would deteriorate badly over about 50000 miles, and make the engine run rich.

Unless you have some issues with maintenance, just give it a good run before the MOT to blow any cobwebs out, and make sure the aircon is turned off before it goes in.

There was a strange case on here or one of the other forums where the ECU recirculated some exhaust gases as part of the higher rev's required to keep the engine going with the aircon compressor running, and apparently it failed on emissions.

The guy took it back the next day with aircon off and it flew through its MOT.

I have read in the Rave details about this, but cannot remember if it was pre-Thor engines or just one of the diesels.

As mentioned previously change the air filter and possibly a set of new plugs.

Our figures for the emissions after the V8 engine rebuild were very low indeed, quite surprised me! It's a 1999 Thor V8.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone, I know the previous owner often changed the oil, oil filter as he did long journeys everyday and when I bought the disco it had 152,000 miles on the clock, I don't do that many long journeys, it does about 12 miles per day to work and back and maybe 50 mile on a weekend.

Fingures crossed it will pass.

If anyone has anymore idea's please keep them coming.

Thanks again

John

mine recently passed and its been sat since april.Did the oil n filters before tho.Should be fine really

Have you heard of a product called unicat4? I use it in all my vehicles, cuts down smoke and emmissions and improves smoothness and mpg on my 200tdi.

V8's don't smoke and are smooth already and I dought that it would improve it's mpg but if it did the shops would sell out. :D

Its a commercial product that is suitable for petrol or diesel engines. Im just speaking as ive found, it was recommended to me by a TD5 owner and ive been very impressed.
