Ok.. so Im doing 30mph on a normal tarmac road up a slight hill, just as I crest it theres a terrible metallic 'bang' from the back end somewhere which is immediately followed by a speed relative knocking!

I pulled over and had a quick look underneath for anything obvious, nothings leaking or fallen off etc so I decided to limp it home at 5mph - luckily this only happened less than a half mile from my parent's house.

Obviously I've still got drive, although you can feel the knocking through the vehicle which is not pleasant even at 5mph! My first guess is a broken rear half shaft, or maybe a diff problem  She did have a hard pay-and-play weekend last week so maybe something twisted and has now given out?

Any thoughts chaps? Many thanks!

Sounds terribley expensive. Good luck.
Not had much experience of Disco's transmission yet.I'm sure I'll get my share.
I think its probably worth while to have a close look and a bang about before getting terribly worried about diffs etc. Although it may be
I'd suggest its more likely to be a UJ or rubber donut departed this life.
I had a UJ go once, it lost all the needle rollers from one pair of cages and the noise was incredbile, but a gentle clutch foot got me to a garage.
Did'nt do much for the housing, but no other damage.
I've also had a rubber donut drive seperate, it looked ok from the outside with no load Black and oily) , but as soon as you loaded it up it squirmed all over the place.
This then put the prop shaft out of line so everything vibrated.
Good Luck.

Wheel bearing would be my guess. One of my front ones went on the m11 one day. Was a loud bang so I coasted to the hard shoulder, but could not find anything wrong under the truck.

It did drive with some knocking but I needed to get home.

If you have driven with colapsed bearings then be prepared to replace the stub axle and bearing case.

One of my front ones went on my old disco at about 60mph. Locked the wheel momentarily. Quite scary but I did manage to drive it about 10 miles home slowly.

Same as mine. Was on the hands free talking to the missus when there was a bang and the steering snatched to the left.

Good job the motorway was quiet.

humm... ok thanks for your thoughts, shame it was raining today so didnt get a chance to check it out, but hopefully it wont be to damaged!

Have you checked the rubber drive doughnut that joins the rear prop to the diff? As tinhat says it might be that.

I did have a quick look, it looks intact although you can see movement in it when the 'knock' happens every couple of rotations. I'll check this evening... with a better source of light ;)

If you've been giving Some abuse like you say I would take a guess at the rear diff. It's probably sheared a few teeth off the crownwheel, that'll be your knock when the pinion tries to turn the missing teeth then grabs what's left of the others.
Easiest way to check is to take the drain plug out of the axle,as it's magnetic all the bits of diff will be stuck to it,if so it's time for another diff I'm affraid

Hope this helps

Thats true.. I didnt think of that, luckily I've got a spare diff so lets hope its that - then I wont need to buy anything! lol

Quick update, rear diff was the cause... the centre shaft holding the planetary gears had snapped thus shooting everything outwards! Its not a good sign when you drain the diff oil and its a lovely shiney metallic colour and filled with sheared teeth!! (I'll take some pics of the mullered diff, it almost makes me feel sorry for the poor thing!)
I've now changed the old diff, given the axle a good clean-out and boshed it all back together with some new gaskets and oil. Job done :)

Well done glad you got it sorted, you can go out and wreck the front one now!

That's exactly what I thought, So much so that I've bought another spare diff! Couldn't afford the ARB's I briefly looked at
