I started the discovery seeking

Hi friends, as the title says I started yesterday finding my "new" landy. I think it´s going to be a D2 as I see it more modern, I know it´s not as offroad capable as 300 but I wanted something slight more confortable.

I´m still in doubt about gearbox, auto or manual , that´s the question.
I tried one auto yesterday and I found it very very lazy, to be fair I only tried 10 min across 2 or 3 streets but is that normal?
Tomorrow I´ve got a couple of appointments and hoppefuly successful, I whish I can show you some picts early (but I´m patient)

I always found the 4 speed auto to be dissappointing but pretty tough boxes and you havent got to worry about the clutch or 2nd gear synchro.

Not as off road capable?

D1 doesn't have traction control as well as centre diff lock.

D1 doesn't have disengagable anti roll bars for off roading.

D1 doesn't pump up its rear suspension for slightly more clearance.

Anyway tyres are probably more important.

A remap can fix many performance issues. the TD5 is a very torquey and powerful engine.

Neither do all the D2's.............Very much spec dependent .......................

I wondered why mine was top book, it was only after I bought it that I found that CDL was optional, all the ones I saw had it!

But I was only looking at facelift ones

Ah the old CDL fitted or not question....LOL.......

My 53 plate FL has the sticker saying diff lock................only thing that has it on the vehicle........Did you try engaging diff lock on all the vehicles. ?

Not all facelift D2s have all those toys either. Mine has traction control but no CDL, I don't know if it has the internals, I haven't looked, and since it doesn't have ACE, I doubt that it has "disengagable anti roll bars" either, unless I want to get out and get under with a socket set. It does have windy-springs so I can engage the ORM.

No, I just assumed they all had it, it did not occur to me they would have removed it.

Found it a LOT better drive than a D1, cornered nicely, comfortable, so I bought it

JLR didn't remove it, they only fitted it as an option. The electronic traction control was fitted as standard, but not the CDL.

Lovely driving motors, agree , much better than the D1, mine does not have ACE, but does have SLS, and I like it the way it is. Never driven one with ACE, and that is a whole other debate...........

But mine is extra special............the sunroofs do not leak..................not many can say that.........

You obviously didn't compare both the D1 and 2 models when new

I did a few times, between the top of the range D1 which I bought and both the top of the range D2s and other than the extra gizmo's that the D2 has which I wouldn't use, I couldn't find much difference, hence I still have my D1, 19 years on.
I have no need for a disco now although I did look at them at the JLR dealer last year but went next door and purchased a Jag instead, but still have the D1 as a weekend vehicle.

My sunroofs don't leak and never have don't bloody use them is the secret but I wouldn't expect them too on a £32,000 vehicle and which as it stands today with only 45,954 miles on the clock

True,

I compared them as 14 Year old vehicles which they both were when I got them................ a bit more relevant IMHO. I still think the D2 is the better driving vehicle for daily use.

My beloved V8 LPG converted D2 passed its MOT today with no advisories but I've been offered a friends D3 which I'm interested in... if you fancy a D2 ES Premium with all the toys and 90k miles, tons of history and enthusiast owned drop me a pm

Has friends D3 had the oil pump and belts done? probably the most important thing when buying one.

As someone who is looking for a D2 (or maybe D3) at the moment, but probably not a gas-powered one, can I raise the question of mpg if I had to use a Disco as a main car.
When I had a business, I ran a petrol Omega automatic. It did about 40 mpg on motorways. Then I retired and took on "caring", which involved doing tiny trips (eg Home->other house->supermarket->doctors->our house->their house). Each leg was between 200yards and 1/4 mile and involved a long wait, letting the engine cool. So with "Full choke" all the time, the Omega's mpg dropped to 7 - 9 mpg. At the same time in the same use our diesel auto D1 did about 18 - 20mpg and the manual diesel Octavia about 40 mpg. Since then I've always thought the advice against diesel for short journeys was nonsense.
Am I right to assume that an lpg conversion has the equivalent of a choke effect and anyway has to be started on petrol? We would use the Disco as a secondary main car while the Skoda was in for service or otherwise out of action
