hello well i joined landyzone a good while ago been looking through threads and post for the last yr or so picking up on some information as i dont own a landrover yet.
well to start with i only wanted a defender but there out of my price range and ive been working hard and saving harder and i was on the prowl one night and saw a disco for sale 300 tdi im thinking seriously about getting it this week
i just wanted advice on what to look out for because i dont fancy driving 120 miles to spend my money on a car that wont make it back home. so if you guys can guide me in what sort of questions i can ask the seller to help me out and what i should look out for

thanks

apart from obvious worn items on a 15 year old vehicle, rust underneath most will require a lot of welding ,uneconomic getting someone else to do it

As said rust, boot floor, rear arches, front inner arches, door sills,to name a few. Make sure you get a drive or be driven in it. Check transfer box works ok,not the end of the world if its stiff. Give the wheels a wobble and rock the whole thing and listen for any untoward noises. Don't be afraid to take a little screwdriver and have a good prod about either. Ask when cambelt last done. Plus point,it a landy and anything can be fixed.

My contribution would be, if money is tight, don't spend all your budget buying it. Hold some back for the things that will need replacing.

cheers guys ill look out for the rust and i wont spend all my budget just in case.
what sort of milage would be reasonable on an old car like that?
it has 107 000i think that isnt to bad is it?

Thats still early days for a Tdi though it should be coming up for it's 2nd cambelt change so if it's not been done recently factor that into the cost

To be honest, with land rovers it's condition not mileage, so dont worry. I reckon 107k is pretty low mileage for a 300tdi though!
LRO magazine do a buying guide for Disco 1s that you can get from them in PDF, just email them.
Have a look at the power steering box and make sure its not leaking.

just another quick question how do i know how much the road tax will be .i believe some are expensive and some are more reasonable

can you fix stuff yourseif, maybe weld your self, coz as James says if not you will need deep pokets
Knowing a good garage for the things you cant do is a must, aswell

:D
were is you

my sisters fella is a manager for direct line for the cars that are in crashes n stuff and also 1 of my good mates is a mechanic so i think thats kinda covered

Someone once told me that when looking for rust on a disco the common points are 'anywhere between the headlights and the tow ball' :p

i went and brought it today and its really nice was cruising at 80/90 mph when i overtook cars it all seems good no rust and the engine seems powerful
