Hi all.

This is my first post and I've joined specifically for some help with buying a Land Rover.

I've owned one previously, it was a petrol Freelander. T-Reg 50th anniversary thing and it was the biggest heap of garbage I've ever owned. I swore 'never again'.

However, I am in the market for a new-ish car, and I am being drawn back to the brand. I think this is partly because I still like their persona, and partly because they seem to make vehicles that nobody else does. Does that sound stupid? I have to say I kind of agree with "Why buy a car when you can buy a Land Rover?"

So, I'm looking for some buying advice and clearly this is THE place to ask. If you lot are as enthusiastic about these vehicles as I think you probably are, then I'm sure there will be plenty of help. For that I thank you all in advance.

So what do I want? Firstly, my budget is £15k, ideally a bit less and first and foremost, I want a reliable vehicle. Probably a diesel Freelander, maybe a diesel Disco. I'm sure it has to be diesel doesn't it? I can't cope with horrific MPG and so 30MPG is a must really.

Seriously, reliability is the big one though. My Freelander was abysmal.

I think I'd like to buy private from an enthusiast. Those Land Rover dealers have expensive showrooms so they must be putting a massive markup on the vehicles they sell.

Anyway, that's a summary of what I'm after, but I would like to know of any other considerations. For example, tax brackets. Is there a cut-off date for road tax cost making some models cheaper to tax than others? Is there an engine or engines to avoid? What about manual/auto. I think I'd want a manual box but there might be a good reason to buy an auto?

Finally, I am sad to say that this thing won't be going off-road. It will get onto Taunton Racecourse where I work, and maybe down some mud-caked country lanes, but that's as 'rural' as it gets.

So some words of advice, caution, encouragement and general natter would be most appreciated. You can even offer me a vehciel for sale if you wish :)

Thanks
Steve

I'd save a few grand and get a really good example of a very late D2 but that's mostly because I prefer the look of them and would get a higher spec model. But I don't have £15k to spend on a car so my opinion is just fantasy and I'm not considering depreciation or anything :D

I'll probably be shot for saying this, but the Diesel Freelander 2 is quite good depending what you want it for. If you want to do lots of off-roading, then maybe not, but for a good size, good power, comfy, reliable, etc. it works well, can handle lanes / fields, but not rutty stuff as ground clearance is poor.

That said, i own a disco and love it, it all comes down to what your needs are.

hehehehehe

Hardly ever watch TV at all!

Kind of ya goonarmy but it takes ages to download youtube at 20kb.I will have a look when I am at a mates with better broadband. :)

It was the race track that threw me with finallysnappeds post but when I reread ops post I got it!

Mixed opinions so far then...

The racecourse thing is Taunton Racecourse. That's horse racing.

I only threw it in because it's about as off-road as I get, driving a few hundred yards across a field.

To broaden/modify my question then: With £15k to spend, which is the most reliable Freelander/Disco available?

Thanks

Given your requirements i'd go Freelander 2.

You'll get more car for your money

And i believe slightly cheaper to repair

yup, cant believe I'm saying this but for you a freelander 2 is probably the best option, they are better than a F1 ( not that thats saying a lot) i'm told.
but still not better than my disco 1

Either a late Disco 2 for around £10k or an early Disco 3 for all of your £15k. As for reliability, your Landy will only be as reliable as how reliable you are at keeping it serviced and maintained.

As a recent Land Rover convert I looked at the various options and the FL1 td4 sport was my choice. It shifts and has all the benefits of a regular car. It'll handle a touch of the muddy stuff and isn't barn-sized if parking may be an issue. For me and my sprog it's more than adequate. The Disco looks nice but it's ott for my needs. Spend a couple of hours reading all the stickies on each vehicle and you'll have a fair idea what to expect/needs a spanner on it. Take your time and digest all the info/copious amounts of filth and abuse! :)
