Hi folks can anybody out there help me. I have a load of scrap on the drive called a Range Rover.
It is an R Reg 2.5 DSE Auto with 101,000 on the clock. I bought it last October in a hurry and without a warranty, due to home circumstances, from a garage specialising in servicing 4X4’s.
Since then I have had nothing but trouble. I have replaced the battery, the receiver radio remote, and 14 days ago all the glow plugs. But I made the same mistake yet again yesterday and failed to start it. This morning it refuses to start. You know from the first turn of the key that it is going to refuse to start. The glow plug sighn goes out and it tries to start but will not fire. Yes we have had a slight frost overnight but even some of the windows have remained clear.
Can anybody help with possible causes for this failure to start when it has been left for a day? I am now recharging the battery for a further try later today.
I don’t want to go back to the garage because it is miles away and repairs always cost in the hundreds.
I must say this is the worst vehicle I have ever bought in over 40 years of motoring and it’s a good job I don’t live near a cliff because I would push it over with pleasure.

Injector leak off pipes letting air in is a good place to start. Cheap and nasty glow plugs is another possibility. Try cycling the glow plug light 3 times before you attempt to start it. Also worth putting a voltmeter on one of the glowplugs to see if it is getting full voltage, glow plug relays on all diesels fail in time.

The diode pack in the back of the alternator is a known cause of overnight discharging of battery if faulty, and before you shove it over the cliff most makes of vehicles have diode packs in alternators that fail.

True, but he has not got a flat battery as he says it turns over and tries to start:D

with mine been delivererd tommorow morning reading this sort of thread scares the foooking life out of me:eek:what have i done.

Given yourself an excuse to learn about cars, electronics and compressed air, plus the opportunity to take a second mortgage if you need to use a garage:eek::eek::eek:

Seriously they are not that bad, this site attracts all the owners with problems so it gives a bit of a false impression:D:D:D

yea, but he also says, from the first turn of key you know it's not gonna start and some thing about recharging battery, so unless you is there, could be anyone's guess, not a lot of info as to how long it's cranking, or if its turning over slow and a multitude of other useful things that could help us.

i personally think after owning 3 disco,s and a relative owning a rrl322 unless you have a money tree in your back yard or your willing to get your spanners out forget about landrover ownership, especially if your the type that goes running to the local garage every time your landy dont start beause your knowledge is limited-BUY A VOLVO IT,LL NEVER LET YOU DOWN

FFS, if you is wanting a vehicle to drive on the road get anythin you like, but from my experience and I've been driving them for 30 + years, if you want some thing to get you into the bush you will never beat a landrover, I have taken on all types in all situations and landi comes up trumps always. Buy anything else and you be spending a lot of time winching youself around the place. And it does not matter what you get they all break, just do a google search and you'll be surprised at the so called reliability of the asian invasion, there is lots of peeps not happy with them.

is the battery charging? If alternator is fcuked then it wont charge in the first place. I'd take it to a car spares, they usually do free alt/batt check??????

Those doozels did have that problem when fitted to BMW's if the pumps on the way out it will only start from fullish tank.

It a relatively simple job once you've dropped the tank, then its easy to change the pump.

I recommend you get a new one, about £115 on-line, if that is the problem. If you have bubbles in the fuel lne between the filter and the injection pump, and if the engine will run with over 1/3 of a tank, then I would say your in-tank pump is shot.

Hi
Don't give up on it yet! Dont forget you are running an old, complex car, there are very few, if any, cars of 97/98 vintage that will be running trouble free! especially ones with so many accessories.

I had very similar symptoms, turned out to be the common problem with fuse box.

Assuming you are reasonable with the spanners its best to get back to basics.
1. Battery needs to be in good condition, if its low on volts it won't have enough to turn starter and give enough volts to the ECU. Try it agin when cahrged if it doesn't start straight away then dont keep trying. Check next:
2. Are you getting fuel? Carefully Release one of the pipes from the fuel filter in the engine (quick release so easy) cover with some rags switch on the igintion. you should get a good flow of fuel. You should also hear pump run when you switch igintion on. If no fuel then start to check up in the engine fuse box. Check that the fuel pump relay has power using a 12v tester and also ECU relay. Check and clean fuses and connections with contact cleaner, look for any signs of terminals being heated up/melted.

Fuse boxes are straight forward to swap just do everything like for like (take pics first) and cost about £150. You need to reset windows sunroof etc. but if you've swapped battery you'll already know that!

Thats my limited knowledge hope it helps.
