I know, I'll change the rear shocks........

Its been a while since I changed rear shock absorbers on a vehicle, last one was a Mitsu Pajero. I remember that the bottom shock mount bolts sheared off both sides and it cost me a fortune to replace them.

Not with a Land Rover, surely?

Wrong! but this time its the top mounting bolt, Almost had it undone, but it sheared off so I assume the other side will do the same.

Anyway, I had to bite the bullet and ordered a new pair from Land Rover. £80 and thats with 10% discount.
The brackets cost more than the shocks!

So, the cars off the road till tomorrow. I guess I will have to borrow my Mother in Laws new Discovery 4 to go to work in. Bummer

A lot of people replace their upper shock mounts for modified items so the stock ones sell for peanuts on eBay....

Cheapest I saw today on ebay was around £20 for a pattern mounting. Problem is, i needed it quickly as I need the car Saturday, so I had to go to the dealers. Got the parts and will fit tomorrow.

Makes a can of Plus Gas look a bit cheaper now, I bet ..

Happens regularly. The top mount threads are exposed to every bit of ****e from the rear wheels and as such soon lose any thread .. hence why most folks start by spraying with PlusGas the day before .. When undoing the nut it effectively has to re-cut the thread ...

I've been spraying all of them for a week! Botton nut came off no problems. I fitted the new braket and shock this morning then started on the other side. All the nuts came off easily and I reused that bracket.
Anyway, both shocks changed, and what a difference to the ride. They must have been the original shocks, now i have a nice set of Monroe Adventure shocks all round.

must say, my shock mount threads are looking a little average! or more to the point, the nuts. i must replace them if they ever need to come off again.

on a general note, i am very impressed with the quality of the fixings on the old land rover

i have previously semi-refurbished a 91 vitara and the fixings on that were made of cheese, literally every shabby looking bolt would round or shear.

i think out of the hundreds i have removed on the landy, i have only had around 10 shear or round off.

every time i do a job, im amazed how the bolt just keeps on turning! they dont make them like they used to i guess, LOTS of cheap fasteners in use these days
