Removed front axle and fitted refurbed one . just need the brake calipers now that are welded solid to me old axle via corroded bolts.

Found my caliper piston removal tool in the garage today, its an old Mini master cylinder which I have a lever attatched to so as I can put pressure into old calipers and force the pistons out.
Just need some blocks of wood so as they can be blocked and persueded to come out even and bobs your uncle.
So the plan is now to put the good pistons in the spare calipers (which have corroded pistons), and fit those.

Don't know why I didn't think of it before:cool:

throw the pistons away ! dont waste yer time with old pistons that might leak when ya got em built up. brand new pistons and seals are only about 7 quid a piston+seal. i rebuilt the ones on me defender and it is dead easy to do but ya have to be carefull getting the new seals in but its still not hard if ya tek ya time !!!

Yep I built my front callipers back up cos the pistons had seized in place was a doddle. just lube the pistons with a little brake fluid to make em easier to insert.

Used to reseal me mini/metro calipers.
Cant afford eight pistons and seals at the moment, it would delay the mot too much, I'm really hoping to get it done this month.

yeah brakes arent important quick bodge be ok just ask guy who is in prison for killing his four kids ffs

I dont consider changing pistons a bodge, if they are in good condition (which they are) and the seals dont leak (which they wont) then they will be Ok.
I've raced cars with such 'bodges' in the past, and I would not drive an unsafe vehicle.
When did you last check your brake lines?, I've just been through all mine and will change the fluid when the bodged calipers go on ready for the mot.
When did you last check your tyres and pressures (other than a kick) or check your wheelnuts, or dip your oil for that matter, let he who is free of sin cast the first stone.
I service and repair my own vehicles and always have done because I'm a qualified mechanical engineer and dont trust for instance the mechanical numpties who serviced my brother in laws Fiesta and turned it out as serviced with a rusty oil filter and no oil on the dipstick, and charged for it all!
I'm not just a replacement parts man, I can repair or even make things if I have to, and do so on a regular basis. I would love to be able to afford new every time but cant. The reason I bought this particular land rover was because I was told it was a cracker and wouldn't be any trouble, so I paid up the last of my savings and was sold a vehicle which broke down every time I went out in it, was parked up and has taken me nearly six months to get roadworthy, six months of scrimping and saving to buy the parts and get it right, I'm nearly there.
I know its my own fault for buying it but I was taken in, sold a pup, call it what you want, wouldn't happen again but here we are with no money, six months road tax lost, and still not on the road yet.
So if what I'm doing is a bodge then so be it, but I can say with confidence that the bodge will stop the vehicle in an emergency, will not leak and will be as good if not better than some of the mechanicaly neglected vehicles with shiney paint and big wheels that I've seen on the roads of late.

Y u changing the calipers if they r safe n ur driving around in it then????
Been off the road for six months, had to change the axle and wanted the good calipers on the new axle as the calipers that came with me 'new' axle have corrosion on the pistons.:)

point taken am in the process of rebuilding an early 90 and the first thing on my list was a set of copper brake pipes.. the bling things come as i can afford them as well but i do consider brakes as the life line, if it dont start it dont go anywhere,, if it goes but dont stop................................

Anyone tried the plastic/nylon brake lines u can get now? Sounds like a good idea but not sure bout the unions tho???
Good as steel if not better IMO.
as thinking of getting d.i.y. kit to make braided hoses up but it's a bit expensive.

just had a look at paddocks prices for the pistons, im giving the highest prices in the booklet.

AEU2539 front piston seal kit for STC201 (for 4 pistons) £4.15

front caliper piston -all /110/130 and 90 from HA701010 £3.00

STC1279 rear caliper piston kit (2 pistons and seals) £12.50

this should give you some idea how cheap new parts are.
im my honest buying new is better than codging old when the parts are this cheap. :D

Aint got the 30 quid at the moment, only get 9k a year so have to budjet and beg borrow and swap parts as and where I can. If I can sell something then I'm flush and can buy some bits:)
