I just calculated that I got 25 mpg out of my manual 300 tdi on a 200 mile trip yesterday. (mostly motorway) I cruised at around 70 mph and am running on 90% vegetable oil. Is this normal for doing 70?

No I won't be unhappy and no I'm not complaining. My gut feeling is that it's about right given that I was doing around 70. Most people who say they get around 30 mpg seem to do around 60 mph on the motorways but I'm not certain. Just want someone to give their opinion on that really.

I'd say 25 is fine, I got 30 on a 75-25 mix so at 90 that would seem right

Depends on hills too as well as headwind etc, many variables that can bring it up or down

I'm running about 75% veg oil and am getting around 35mpg when doing an average of 60 - 65 MPH on the motorway

My motor has been 'tinkered with' by the previous owner.....a lot :D

I am confident he has wound up the fuel - can it be brought back down easily... I would hope to reach 30 mpg one day

Driving UK motorways between 55 and 65 I normally knock out 30 mpg.

A recent trip to Brussels on, super flat French and Belgian dead straight motorways at 65 to 80 I got 25 mpg. On the return journey where time was on my side, at 55 I got 45 mpg. These figures include the short trip from London to Dover via the M20 a rather hilly motorway.

I keep my speeds down as my 200 TDi is not the quietest cars around and sometimes I like to listen to music and occasionally talk to my passengers. Hence the good returns.

I get 30 at 65-70. Pump wound up and more
Boost. No mixing fuel... I don't have a heavy right foot. I left that in my Impreza :)

Just looking at this thread again... Is there some inference that a veg oil mix will give better MPG? How's that then???

I tried veg oil for a while and found cold starting was getting sluggish, I feared for my lift pump and injectors so went back to straight derv - problem stopped.

Sounds about spot on, 70mph is a very inefficient speed. High 50's is about perfect.

Next time you go on a long run try sitting at 56-60 and see what happens, if it's anything like my 300's it will return closer to 30!

I have known it to get 32 driving carefully.

Lift pumps are only £30. It would take just one tank of vegetable oil to pay for that should it go wrong! I bought a nice Delphi one which has a cap on the top which you can unscrew to access the filter within the pump.

There's a guy on here who spent over £700 on doing a very tidy vegetable oil conversion job on his defender 90 300 tdi simply because he didn't want to risk causing any damage to his engine. Funny thing is that even if he did damage his engine, it would still work out cheaper to just replace the engine instead of doing a veggie oil conversion!

Thats fine mate, I get all that... (but it did gum up me 'jectors )

However.... What I is drivin' at is - does being a veggie imply better mpg... simply 'cus you wuz askin about normal MPG and went to the extent of tellin' us what fuel you had - surely it's irrelevant?

I aint havin' a go here, 'tis a genuine question - does a veggie mix give you better MPG??? I cant see how - It would just make yer fuel cheaper surely? :)

It is very relevant what fuel you have in the tank, take a diesel engine, 2.5NA, 200/300tdi whatever, now when finely adjusting the timing on it you have the tank filled with Shell V.Power diesel and you set up the timing so the engine is running beautifully on this fuel, if you then went and filled it with Sainsburys diesel, your engine will not run quite as well on it, the VPower ignites better, so the timing may be a bit retarded.

If he is running with lots of veg oil the timing could do with being advanced slightly as it has a lower cetane rating and need more time to combust.

Some people note a lack of power and very poor fuel consumption on veg oil, now you know why, there timing is probably retarded to an extent that it copes fine on diesel, but with veg oil it just doesn’t have enough time.

So whats the best things to do, well set the timing on the fuel your going to be using or get it bang on with DERV then advance it a little to allow for veg oil going in.

OK but the question I was really asking is....... Does running veg oil give a noticeable improvement on MPG (without tinkering) - My assumption is 'not' but the thread seems to imply yes it does -does that make sense?

So does it? - I mean I dunno, I is just asking.:)
