Some of you my remember that I had the autobox rebuilt on my classic at the end of last year , it had a 12 month 12,000 mile warrenty which is why I didnt just get a used one put in.

Once it had been done I noticed it would clunk on the downshift on overrun when slowing down, the builder said it was play in the fornt diff and that it would lessen when the box had few miles on it and changes were smoother or I could get a new fron diff (they dont sell them)

I said ok and ran it till last week but the clunk was still there so k-man kindly gave me a good diff and I paid the autobox people £190 cash to fit it and eliminate the clunk, in addtion I asked them to sort the fact it would not manually select first and 3 times it had not gone into reverse untill I moved the car forward fist. I thought those last items would be warrenty work though??

I said to him when I turned up check the diffs first. Anyway had it done , he said after doing this diffs that the transfer box is good , there is a tiny bit of play in the back diff but more play in the front half shaft splines.

Anyway paid the £190 (not the £160 as quoted) for the work as he said the shift probs were due to sound proofing blocking the lever?????? he was in there last. but when I drove home it was just the same.

To put it in context a little, he is a nice guy with a good reputation locally and he cut me break on the original rebuild and only charged me £850.

So today I rang him, nicely but obviously not happy (I had him fit the diff so I would have this comeback) and said I wasnt happy and that he recommended the diff change and I was thinking he should have done the half shafts instead if thats the problem and he knew it.

He said "Ill give you your money back but from then on just leave me alone" which doesnt bode well for my autox warrenty

Thing is I just feel bad because hes a nice guy- am I wrong???

He`s a nice guy cos he wants your money and business, not so nice when things go wrong and you kick off which you are entitled to. You`ve paid your money so get him to sort it, simples :D

It does not matter how much this person charged you for the gearbox rebuild, everybody has their own price and he would not have done the job had he not thought it worth doing. The inportant buty here is that he has warranted his work on your gearbox. One presumes he has signed a warranty agreement with you. This person is obliged by law to sort out his warranted work in the stated time/mileage frame.

Even if you have fallen out with each other, he still has to carry out work to a satisfactory conclusion. There is always the legal route!!!

Thats true , thanks guys I feel a bit better.

I am going to pick up my £190 tomorrow

I do have a warrenty for the gearbox rebuild so I should be coverd for that like you say.

Just hope I never need another box rebuild lol

I empathise with you fett, most of us have been there in one form or another (& will be again) You take what you think is the best course of action at the time, only to have it go pear-shaped. It's funny how so many 'nice guys' develop horns & a tail when you need to complain about their work, let alone ask for money back! I hope the problems can be resolved without bloodshed but, as others have said, there is always the legal route. Have a chat with Trading Standards, I've found them very approachable.
