I thought about doing that to my depender! For muppetproofness:D

Thanks guys - this is making sense. So, D2 has no difflock (and no VCU). Has Lo range and uses TC instead of difflock??? No more Q's, I'll go do the homework:)

They're much more reliable in this set up. You have to be aware of tyre size still but not as bad cos there's no gearing difference!

Some have difflock. I believe the pre facelifts had it fitted but not connected. But the traction works well. Oddly my disco spins it's wheels much more easily than the freelander. Probably down to the vcu doing its magic!

nothing wrong with v/cs its just how the y are used in the fl ,even then its not something you have to change every year

Dont disagree, but my experience has always been that the back wheels snatch into life - it gets you out of trouble but is not really 4x4 in my opinion.

Thanks DD & JM.

Tyres?

I've had two D1 300tdis. A 94 & 97. Yes hi lo and difflock. No hdc or traction posh ones got abs;)

Great info, Im not fused about HDC (never used it on my FL) or TC. ABS is more of a general safety issue - I could live with a D1 but read good ones are getting harder to find. Tx again.

just to say yes my old red freelander did do 115mph and i miss it this one seems to have a flat spot every now and then, when the better weather comes i am going to clean out the maf and the egr as the previous owner just did town work my old one was on the motor way every other day, and i have done a full service on this one , as i am a big believer of keeping a car well serviced it pays in the end , but i sometime wish i had never gone in for the £7 hose and come out with another car.as for wind resistance well look at the roof rack with the lights on , and of course they have gone onto this one . ha just a though! may by thats why it will not go over the 100mph

Get that roof rack and extra lights off, Teddy - you'll save money and the planet! :p

Wind resistance / aerodynamics play a bigger part in top speed and fuel consumption than most folks think.

The university I worked in had a windtunnel and my colleaques in Mech. Eng. were always banging on about the economies to be made.

They converted me to 'smoothing things out' - to the extent that I have an EGR bonnet-edge spoiler and flat wiper-blades. I've even put tank-tape over the tie-down ring in the front valance. Autoglym polished front end too.

I know that it's better as I have much less flies hit the windscreen. When I do have a roof-box on, it gets battered with flies while the screen stays relatively fly free.

I can remember a Top Gear programme where they even removed the door mirrors in an attempt to get a higher max speed. Maybe that's the real reason for the powerfold mirrors! :p

Singvogel.

Singvogel. re flat wiper blades, do you think they are any good? just dumped mine didnt think they cleaned the screen very well.

Mine are great - vast improvement over the traditional type. less 'missing' at higher speeds, and less smearing of traffic film. Also they don't clog with heavy snow, or freeze and become inflexible like the joints on the conventional ones do.

I've had the current ones for 2 winters and although I have a new set waiting to go on, I don't notice any deterioration yet.

Mine are the genuine Bosch ones - but I've seen some pretty ropey looky-likey copies in the likes of poundstretcher and halfrauds.

How old are yours?

Singvogel.

Mine were approx 6 months old but seemed to keep the shape of the screen where they rest, so when they swept they missed loads.Must admit they were given to me so im unsure of the quality of them.
