Previous topics about the BMW cyclone filter mod have stated that it is a good thing to fit but what i dont understand is that some who have fitted it say their car is more responsive and it runs better. How can it affect performance? or is it all in the mind?:confused:

AFAIK it cannot affect performance.

Can give a huge boost to one's peace of mind though. ;)

SV.

How can it affect performance?

it's related to crankcase pressure ..

combustion blowby passed the piston rings causes a raise in crankcase pressure ..
and is an added load on the pistons ..
it also has a negative effect on oil circulation ..
doesn't do oil circulation in the turbo any favours either ..
can blow oils seals as well ..

didn't witness it .. but heard of an hgv engine sump exploding from crankcase pressure ..
i think the oil-plus-diesel-blowby-fume pressurised mix ignited .. bit of an extreme result ..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
quote from one bike forum :
" Pumping is quite a major source of power loss in an engine, and it's noticeable that good tuners pay almost as much attention to the bottom end as they do to the top end. In the nowadays-conventional case of an IL4 you have 2 pistons going up and 2 coming down. The air rushes from under the descending ones to fill the vacuum generated by the rising ones, and repeats many times a second. That's a lot of power consumed for absolutely no return!
On my Weslake race engine (360 degree parallel twin) it breathed through the nose of the crank and the nut was fitted with a disc-type flapper valve designed to allow the engine to breathe out but not back in. The result was the cases ran at reduced pressure which helped keep the oil inside and by reducing the presure (hence density and mass) of air pumped less power was wasted. Note this will not work on a normal 4 as the air is simply pumped round the engine not pumped in and out as with a single, 360-twin or v-twin. It used to be common on old racing singles to make as large a breather pipe as possible, to reduce resistance to pumping and crankcase pressure, but now the smart money is going for one-way breathers and negative crankcase pressures.
On road engines nobody bothers with this and the breather is simply vented into the airbox so any oil fumes from piston blowby can be burned for emissions reasons. "
try googlin' .. " negative effects of crankcase pressure " .. or similar ..
be a bunch of related articles on it
Best of all is to play a Bruce Springsteen album - good for an extra 15mph on the motorway. ;)
Claim 5 points on licence as a bonus! :p
Freelander speedo adds another 10 mph - so to get better performance make sure your Landy has the following;
Filter from top of thread
Clean (inside and out preferably)
Is red, pref bright red
Is capable of playing the "Boss" loud.
There it is gang, at least 20mph on top speed, so somewhere around 75ish:D
my old red td4 would do 115mph, this one "Black" will just reach 100 on a good day with a decent wind behind it, and it is all down to the engin tuning these day to increase mpg figures to keep the goverment happy.
i bottled out @ 90mph ..
aerodynamic defficiency seems to be apparent over about 80mph ..
i rekon over 'x' mph .. the sump guard might try 'n lift the front end ..
felt it go 'light' once .. hitting a water-puddle at speed ..
steering was fine .. but front end seemed to lift slightly ..
don't like it in sidewinds either ..
be why i .. sometimes .. listen to music like this whilst driving
Tom E. Morrison - Eden's Slumber - YouTube
keeps me out of heavy-right-foot trouble ..
and reduces a tendency for experiencing hippo-road-rage :)
See, case proven!!:) Bet you kept the red one cleaner as well.
Must have been scary seeing 115 on a Freelander 1. Whatever they are built for, its not the Autobahn.
Standard td4 is about 100 or 102mph top so being able to do 115mph would mean it's been modded.
Well it was red, clean - not sure if Springsteen was playin. Anyhow they aint built for speed. If we wanted to go fast we'ed all have Beemers or some such - now there's an idea. Win lottery, but D4 and M3.
Blue ones is betterer. Since the evoque came out and I put up a request for peeps to buy blue ones new so there's more to choose from on the second hand market in the future, I int stopped seeing new blue ones. Result. :)
Can you imagine the size of the forum posts when Evoque is 10 years old? Sooo complex. Read in this months LR Monthly that the Freelander name will be dropped as the FL2 becomes the baby Disco. I had not realised how developed the new FL2 is over the original FL2 and this seems to make sense to me - anyhow, rambling.
Wrongy - I can cruise at 105 all day if need be in Germany. However I tend to run at around 3000rpm which is just on 80. More than that and the fuel costs soar. I use the Sat-Nav to check my speed as the speedo is too optomistic.
I've seen 113 on the Sat-Nav but decided I didn't like to treat my Freelander that way - but it was still pulling well and could have gone quite a bit more
Without a roof-box Freelanders are more than fit to play tag with the 'little' Audi's and the BMW's.
Have you driven a Freelander on an autobahn? I cross Germany on my way to and from the Balkans at least 3 times a year.
Its negatory on your designed for the autobahnen idea, I have to say.
Running at 80 - I even get Smarts going past. :eek:
However it doesn't matter how fast one chooses to go there are always those who go faster - even in heavy rain or snow - I've had a 'something' go past like a bat out of hell and left me as if I was stationary, when I was driving at what I felt was right on the limit of the conditions at the time. I haven't a clue as to what make it was or even the colour.
Having said that I still feel safer in Germany than on the M25 for instance, as the general standard of driver training is much higher.
That's the end of my ramble.
Singvogel.
Never taken mine over 90 on the clock (low 80,s in reality). I have driven in Germany back in the day when I had a company Audi 100. This was a great AutoB cruiser. Good roads and disciplined driving, as I recall. Taking my old Fleeby over 90 just would not be right - be like me running 5 miles, or anywhere for that matter.:)
I agree on the running 5 miles bit. :D No chance i'd try that. :rolleyes:
and the disciplined driving.
I have a BMW 528i which was definitely designed for the autobahns but I actually prefer my Freelander as it's more comfortable and relaxing on 4 to 5 day journeys. Perfect for the auto-box and cruise control.;)
Nice to have the choice SV. Realise you wont agree but just IMO, you cant beat a motorway cruiser on the motorway. My last proper car (joking) was the previous shape Passat 20v. now that was a mile eater and fantastic build quality. I should have kept it (as well) when I got the FL.:)
I do understand and agree with you, under normal conditions. Snag is I need the load carrying capacity en route and a 4X4 when I get to my destination.
I should have rented or built an aircraft hanger and kept all the cars I've ever owned. Would be worth a lot now, but on second thought still wouldn't pay for the hanger cost. ;)
True - but would not have kept all (Orion, Sierra, Astra (early)) but the VW defo. I have a plan in the future to run a Landy for fun and a mile eater for day to day:)
I would hope they would keep the Freelander named as it is. FL3... I think reporters like to push the limits when they talk about the future. Years ago the RR was pushed forward which left a gap in the market. The D1 was born. Both models were then pushed forward and the freelander filled the gap. I'm not too fused about problems fixing cars. When I was little peeps would talk about traction control being the work of the devil. Cars have it as standard now. We'll manage somehow.
