Firstly hello to all! Have been away a long time now, pretty much since I finished the rebuild as all has been going pretty well with the disco..
..until today that is!

Think I was enjoying myself a bit too much, going over deep pot holes far too quick my rear o/side 'axle brace' (sorry don't know correct name) has either snapped or disconnected from the chassis.
If snapped, which I guess it has its a very clean break..

Can anyone tell me which it is?
Easy fix?

definately snapped, its the panhard rod.easy enough fix, just need the part.

Depending how new the olts are you may need to grind them off so make sure you have new ones :)
 
That's no panhard rod. It's a rear trailing/radius arm do not for the love of what ever you beleave in drive it get it replaced.

Yes it has snapped so it will need replacing.

It is pritty straight forward job

Shall get a replacement ordered, presumably I can get it on by simply jacking up the chassis rail?
Your right about not driving it, was a hairy crawl home!!!
 
I got one from fleabay for £12 second hand. You will need to lock off the snapped side to stop it spinning, when you undo the nut. They can be tight aswell. The bolt on the axle end can be very tight on times aswell. Soak everything in wd40 or the like for a day or 2 first. Check the bracket that is welded to the axle aswell, mine snapped off the axle, giving the same interesting driving that you may of had. Rust was the killer on mine
 
Thanks Alex, seen one on eBay for £35 did you go for a new chassis bush aswell.
Take it I'd get away with just doing the one side and leaving the n/s arm as is?

As yours snapped, I would be replacing both at the same time plus new bushes all round. After all the other one has probably done the same amount of work????

Ditto here ... not worth scrimping on such an important part, in my view.

Although I was driving it off road particularly hard at the time!!

Do I just lift chassis rail to get new ones on?

You don't need to lift anything. Feed the new link in at the chassis end then fit at the axle end and finally fully fix the chassis end.
 
the only thing you "may" need to do is shove or pull axle abit to get the axle bolt to line up..

im with everybody though change both, i do everything of mine in 2's i know its done then (unless obv theres only 1 to change lol)

That could have gone VERY wrong!!

Usually what happens is the trailing arm snaps, the wheel runs back, pops the spring out, car drops onto and jams the tyre, prop pulls out and you screech/coast/crash into the nearest thing in a cloud of smoke and brown trousers!

Lucky! Perhaps your anti roll bar was the only thing holding the axle vaguely in place?

I have a pair of good but used arms off mine in Altrincham if you want a quick fix.

Jesus wept!! Now that's got me thinking, sliding sideways along a muddy track through a series of potholes, which happened to be very close to a deep ditch, could have had pretty nasty consequences!
Thanks for the offer on the replacement Sam, I've just picked up a replacent pair along with new bushes, bolts etc from LR Parts in Speke, £80 all in!
Joys of owning a Landrover eh :D :D :D
