So I have had a few posts on here over the last few months. I got my first Defender in March and have spent every penny (and sometimes more) I have left over at the end of the month fixing and improving it.

My girlfriend already hates this forum as I am on it all the time looking for answers as I am learning on the job. So sorry if I say stupid things below.

I am currently awaiting a pair of 2nd row doors and rear upper panels (the rear windows) to arrive from the UK and then I am stripping the car down and putting it back together with the help of a few talented Kenyans I have been introduced to. I will post the progress on this thread.

Cars here are ridiculously expensive so a crappy land rover will fetch at least 1.2 Million KSH – about £10,000. I bought mine, after having a full mechanical, off the government, it had been left to rot in the rain for two years (canvas safari roof) so the insides where rotting and stunk… I tried to looked beyond this as I wanted a 110 so much! The log book said that it was once a V8 but had had a 300tdi put in two years ago - This had a genuine 91,000 KM on it. Asking price was 1.2 Million but I halved it after 2 months of haggling and got the car for about 630k or 5 grand. I knew it needed lots of work but looked forward to doing it after I spent the last year rebuilding a Triumph Spitfire with my brother from a shell.

First things first I got the car home and removed the crap seats and the tacky Maasai covers. The rear middle seat was welded onto a bodged bracket, we call this Jua kali – it means the 'hot sun' in Swahili but literally translate as a sh*t job. Its a good phrase to describe the work that has been previously done on my car.
I called in the cavalry and got the seat removed – no need for goggles!!

My girlfriend and I then spent the rest of the day removing all the surface rust from where all the rain has been sitting in the boot – it was a harder job than we thought. Finally we finished and that was the last time she showed any interest in the car also!

The seats actually are not too bad once we removed the covers... I decided to get them recovered instead of getting new ones. The Mrs was happy with her contribution.

its funny, your missus seems to have enjoyed the landrover as much as me, she rode in mine and helped me with a few bits when i first got it, and now she wont go in the garage or let me talk about it lol

maybe it was me saying we couldnt have new curtains as i needed some bits for the landrover.......

The knocking noise I kept hearing when releasing the clutch was clearly my front prop-shaft. On closer inspection it had been welded on the one of the joints and had really worn bolts. It was generally a piece of crap. That was replaced.

The next problem that came up was an odd catching sound when I was in low gears in traffic. Replacing the brakes and removing the hand brake cable has stopped it - although Im yet to reconnect my handbrake :crazy_driver:

Oh and heres a picture of the Chairs ones they had been recovered, look quite smart - especially now all the plastic that was cream has been painted black.

I knew the electrics on my car where suspect as half of the dash didn’t light up and I had no reverse light. I managed to fix these problems with a Haynes Manuel, this forum and some electrical tape. But when the car started billowing with smoke while my girlfriend parked in a shell garage I decided to get a professional in. Finally I had full electrics.

After this I fixed or replaced a whole bunch of things that would have gone sooner or later:
- Front diff
- All new cv joints and drive shafts
- New bushes all round
- new fuel, oil and air filters
- new nylock nuts on all proft shaft joints
- new fuel lift pump
- welded and cleaned the leaking fuel tank
- replaced steering box and power steering pump
- new starter motor
- new bulbs
- new 265/70r16 tyres (last ones where falling to bits)
- Bearings replaced on all sides after I removed a wheel and found that there was a worrying amount of movement!


After this the car was running and driving loads better and easily managed 850km in three consecutive days – including getting stuck in deep mud about 25 meters from two male lions. There are no pictures of this, as I had to wait to be pushed out by a big 130 who has some actual tread on his tyres (no one fancied getting out to fit a tow rope).

Just ordered a new Snorkel offa ebay - should be here with a friend when he flies out in a week or so... Im impressed at the craftsmanship for the homemade one on mine! Although it looks terrible it does work!

Managed to run out of fuel in the bush on saturday, in the process i managed to feck my lift pump and blow my starter trying to get back to civilisation.:(

Maybe pushing it a bit hard... my fuel filter managed to sheer free from its bracket..

Good news is my doors and panels are on route, so will be able to start stripping her down in a week or two and this thread might be more interesting.

Heres a picture of the filter and me towing someone outta the mud - at least I had some fun! :D

Parts should be with me in a week so getting everything ready for doing her up.

With that in mind I have been offered a puma bonnet for a really decent price. What problems will i have fitting it to a 300tdi 1992? I've been looking at the Puma and im pretty sure the grill sticks out a bit further. Will the hinges need adapting?
