HSE Freelander, Whats in the boot?

Was looking at a freelander HSE (About a 05 reg) and in the boot where I'm used to seeing a lockable bit in the floor, it's just screwed down. When I opened it I found (other than the usual water) a black box screwed to the inside with some wires attached. It's a shame as the lockable area is pretty handy for me to transport some... special stuff... that I need to carry for my job.
I'm sure someone can tell me what's the box for and is it just on the HSE models?
