Hi guys, I'm about to purchase another Td4 (2003 Auto) as a project, (must be mad etc etc) the guy im buying it from has given up on it as a non starter, but here's my dilema,
His garage replaced the lp pump, but now say it needs a set of injectors so the guy wont spend any more money on it. But, if you spray a small amount of easy start down the air intake it starts easily, runs really smooth and no excess smoke, it drives fine. Im an engineer not a mechanic so I dont want to doubt the local garage, but in my experience if the injectors were the problem then it would run rough and smoke?
So as in the title I tried to go through various threads but there were sooo many, thought I would try another.
TIA

I would check the HPFP regulator O-rings first low cost item £5.50 at most, maybe an hours work to remove and replace, fairly easy if you can handle spanners ok, remove the starter to get access, while you have the starter removed you may as well check the contacts and plunger again small cost to replace £12.00, maybe change the fuel filter, I wonder if they added a good fuel pump, cheap ones don't last long and some can be faulty from the start.

Always best to start your own thread in my opinion, that way you can keep track of what you have asked, also when you have tried out the solutions suggested you can report back which in turn will help others in the future, try doing a leak back test also on the injectors, kit available below from the bay,

Had a quick drive around the field and there is plenty of black smoke, going to make my own leak test kit, got 4 x 25ml bottles (pee sample bottles are free) and some tubing that i have left over from doing the brake air lines. Will keep you posted with the results :)

Update, done a leak test, needed a bucket!!! injectors leaking from the seats up the shafts and dumping fuel out of the return lines for fun. 3 injectors came out fine, number 3 cylinder seizes solid, eventually pulled it out after 3 hrs after i borrowed a removal kit, the bore is completely full of carbon ****e. checked the crankcase breather, doesnt look like its ever been changed, on top of that no air filter? Filters on order, new copper washers and exchange injectors on order. Will update in a weeks time after all the parts have arrived.

Thank you for getting back and informing us, it all helps others in the long run, while you have time clean out the manifold and EGR, remove the MAP sensor before cleaning the manifold use oven cleaner let it soak for a few hours then jet wash it out, clean the EGR with carb cleaner, clean MAP sensor with the same but do not spray direct into the sensor hole. some photos of manifolds I have changed on the R40

Were are you getting your injectors from? I'm tempted to order a set for my car as it's really smokey when cold.and runs on three cylinders for a few seconds. I did a rough leak back test using old beer bottles and three of them were leaking twice as much as the fourth.
Let us know how it goes.

In my opinion (which probably counts for very little according to the wife) you have 2 options, reconditioned units approx £100 each or used from breakers. It depends on the value of your motor etc etc. i get mine from breakers, i try to get them from the rover 75 model rather than freelanders, they seem to be in better condition. the last 2 sets that i have ordered have cost £60 for all 4. I buy 4 new copper seal (under £5) fit them and do a leak test. So far ive been lucky, if they are no good then you get your money back. If you need a decent garage to ask you have Wilsons garage on the road to Keady near you, its a good family garage.
Will post my results

Suggest next time...

You use beer bottles that dont have holes or cracks in them...boom boom...lol

Injectors don't seem to be the type of things that people recondition at home but pay a lot of money for replacements.

However, the couple of people who have reconditioned them and have reported back on here say the bits were small and fiddly but cheap and they worked great afterwards.

Dont since ive joined this forum heard anybody at home sorted their injectors by themselves thats why mechanics send them to specialists

Hi Pals.
Not wanting to hijack the post, just ask a quick question. Arctic2, Where would i find the MAP Sensor on a 03 plate TD4.
Thanks for your time.

Cheers.

The MAP is below the hose I've arrowed. It's fitted to the inlet manifold, below that hose.

Thanks for that..
I'll have a dig for it and give it a clean.
Does any one know the best solvent /cleaner to do this with??

Cheers all.

Quick update, cleaned manifold and egr valve today, where the previous owner has been running it with the knackered injectors its caused massive "coke" build up in all parts, started with a scrapper then cleaning products, before the jet wash (took it to the local garage due to the amount of ****e coming out of it.) replacement injectors fitted, just waiting for the new filters and will update again.

Sounds like you've already bought the filters there deangermouse but the bmw part number for the revised superior vortex style crank breather is 11127799224

Think you can get them on ebay as well, but surprisingly can be cheaper from the dealer (sub £50), if you don't fancy the 15-20 quid chinesium ones. Or any 2004 up to about 2011 320d / 318d / 520d / 120d / 118d (etc) from a breakers, loads of them rotting in scrappies nowadays and the revised style filter housing never wears out.
