Hi all, my gf and i are currently refubishing my 2 1/4 litre diesel engine and have got to the point of putting the timing equipent back on, but are a little unsure as the best way to time it up.

Any Advice??

I have found various guides on how to do it for a petrol engine, bt i'm sure there will be some subtle differences.

Thanks

Varney

Its a right ****er timing the 2.25 diesel if its the standing up injector pump, as you have to slacken every injector pipe some may need bent, then turn the pump there should be a small arrow on the bottom of the pump and if u look on the outer housing of the flywheel thre will be a small flap (door) that will allow u to see markings on the flywheel once you think you have a good setup (look in manual for the markings) then tighten all back up then bleed the injectors. Be very careful with the pipes I have had many a pipe lose the end :(

thanks for the advice, but i think i was asking the wrong question. It's the timing gear i want to know about, not timing the injecter pump.

thanks

thanks thats great,
any personal opinions when it comes to doing it, or is it a case of follow the book and it'll work

yes the chain wheels are off, along with the chain and tensioners etc
any idea how long this can take to do? and how hard it is for someone who's never done anything like this before?

thanks again

a good hours work if yer end up messing about with it, like ah said in me pm matey , get yer cam in tdc position and then yer crank with the key at 12 o clock , tap yer cam sprocket on , then get the tensioner in position and bolt it up, when tensioned dont let the sprockets move, turn it over by hand when set up bout 6 or 8 times and then re check timing , if yer a tooth out yer will kno, yer crank and cam are 2:1 . out of interest did yer put timing marks on with a dot punch before yer stripped it ?? makes life a lot easier up on rebuilding

The timing procedure for these engines AS SUGGESTED BY LR is quite complicated, and involves setting the crankshaft / flywheel to the EP mark (if it has one) and setting the camshaft so that No. 1 cylinder exhaust valve is fully open - like dead on the nail. This is NOT as easy to set as it sounds, and the use of a DIAL GAUGE is recommended, but few if any LR engine builders would need to do that. Anyway, once that is done fit the chain over the two chain sprockets WITHOUT MOVING THE SPROCKETS so that the chain on the side AWAY from the tensioner is TIGHT. Now tension up the tensioner, and make sure it isn't on the far end of its ratchet. If it is, the chain is stretched and should be renewed.

You just need to be as sure as sure can be that the flywheel is set to that EP mark, and #1 exhaust valve is EXACTLY mid way of fully OPEN when you align the sprockets and fit the chain.

Next job is aligning the injection pump.

That isn't rocket science either.

thanks to you both, i will get too it after new years,

in reguards to did i mark it before dismatling it, no as i received the engine, as a spare with my landy and am just putting it back together, it was in about 5 box's

You'll be OK.

If you PM me I will try get you a photocopy the pages from a diesel manual that sets it all out nicely. This manual is easier to follow than the LR version.

thanks for the continued advice,

not sure if i mentioned, as it is definatly relivant

I have NEVER done anything like this before, so any idiots guide tips are greatly received
