how to tell which engine ?

It will be a td.

It's overpriced if it is.

Hang on and buy something else or get it and put a tdi in. (£1000+).

More important to check the chassis though!

im back

well ive decided on the look/final end product i want- a tdi with side country windows with tinted privacy glass, black or matte black with black chequer plating and a snorkel, seen a couple of black ones on the road this week and decided thats the color for me, so im open to the idea of a cheapish tdi with country windows if rough body but solid and getting it re sprayed or a diy/cheaper matte job, or ideally a nice enough black one just popping up, only if the right solid base came along for the right price

but ideally i want to get a nice £3k-4k black one all good to go, if the right one pops up, if a nice solid original black tdi country thats got a nice paint job and runs and drives nice with a nice interior and roof lining etc and a year mot and looks nice and looked after, il pay 3.5-4k for one

anyway-

this one today was yellow previously  and had had the red paint job, but all engine bay and in the corners and under seals etc were all still yellow, it was literaly a red blow over at some point, was a td engine..that wouldnt start  "it was running ok this morning" he said, and he had to jump it and mess about to get it started, but might of just been the battery

bulkhead was lovely and solid inside and out no probs there at all, but chassis was a bit worse for wear, leak in passenger side foot well and was all rusted out along the side ,front and rear, the corner of the seat base had a big hole going right to the outside, the front arches from underneath where they go down towards the front had virtualy no joining along the outsides, badly rusted away, and generally poor and rusty all over the place on the chassis and floor pans witj jaged rusted through bits all over the place you could pull off etc , sort of thing thats only good for £500 and a full restoration re build project or something if you were a decent welder with time anbd facilities

when he eventualy got it going id seen enough n said it wasnt for me and was on my way , but least ive learnt a bit more about them and another one seen, seen a bad chassis and a bad bulkhead now and tried various engines, so when i do find a nice and "the right" one, il know it hopefully

this is the sort of look i want, but no side decals and black check plating and blacked out rear glass

1986 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 300TDI AUTOMATIC STATION WAGGON

or maybe even a white, with all black snorkel, plating, windows and have a "storm trooper" type look, i thought would be quite good

with something like this as a base, but thats a TD 1987 and i think way over priced ? seems so many defenders are over priced
1987 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 7 seater county diesel

spotted this 300tdi one looks like it was red at some point, but cheap 2k if its solid, but a bit far to just pop to see it really

Why don't you go for a ex-mod 90?

Why don't you go for a ex-mod 90?

its in the thoughts , but a few hours drive, and theres plenty there, but il hang on a little while, as an ex mod id have to get it painted and then tdi it, plush up the interior, checquer plating, snorkel, maybe tyres etc etc, probably talking 5k for all that ? and it sill still be green in the nooks n crannies ...so would be better off buying a nice black one in the 1st place, which is what im going to start hunting for, if i can buy a solid original black td country for 2.5k maybe, then its just tdi and tidying and 2k spent would make a nice end product, or il spend more on a nice tdi one and be happy

you need to be less fussy, and just get a solid one that is sound. then do the rest yourself. chequer plate snorkles and the like arnt to everyones taste and if they have been fitted the seller will be asking for their monies worth back..

i was the same, went to look at quite a few with toys on and stuff and they were all ****e on my budget, which wasnt far off yours.. and i got a solid td ( apart from abit of bulkhead rust which i have dealt with easily) and fitted a 200tdi and have spent alot less then if i was to buy a similar one with 200tdi...

this was up for 3795, now sold, might of got it for 3-3250 maybe, comehting like that would do me a treat, least im getting a good ideal of what im looking for now

That is MASSIVELY overpriced. Someone has obviously been duped by the shiny paint job, what's underneath it is worth less than half that! That's a 1 grand motor with a £500 paintjob.

Nice factory tdi could be up to £8K.

Alternatively buy a scrapper for a grand, put a galvie chassis on it, recon the engine, tidy up, respray, you should have something tidy for £4K and a bit of work. Or get something used but tidy and put some shiny paint on it. Or better still, get a saxo and weld a couple of baked bean tins to the exhaust. I think you might be missing the point of land rover.

A ex -mod would be in better shape lower miles, sell the n/a for 500 quid buy a disco doner for under 1k motor and all the bits with spares then part out body money ahead. And then you would have one like you wanted and it would last longer. You a being to pickie on the color.

Example 98 110 with 30k miles 3750 quid soft top would make a good one.

they have 90's the same some as low as 2500quid

if i can, ideally id like to avoid heavy work as ive not got a work shop or the means and knowledge to do that myself

the seller of this has messaged me back ,looking for £3k cash, which i think seems sensible and it looks nice ? awaiting answer to some more questions, but its a bit of a treck and way too far to just pop along for a look at it, thoughts ?

but generally just something thats like this would be nice if its as nice as it looks and sounds (minus the 2nd gear crunch) , in a dark green like that i wouldnt mind or black

That's more like it, if they are offering £3K for cash, go for it - if it's as good as it says and looks that would be a reasonable price.

Check the chassis really carefully (especially for filler) and in particular the rear cross-member, and i reckon you might have a reasonably good deal there.

if it was closer... ! its a 400 mile / 7 hour round trip , so too far to just go for a look :( would have to be "certain" it was all rock solid and a good honest defender not hiding anything, to travel that distance with cash in the pocket, if only it was closer

150 miles each way - it's worth it if it is as good as he says, and if it isn't, just walk away. Best thing is to have a chat with him, with a list of questions you need to ask (start a new fred on ere for examples!) and see if you trust him - if you do, do the trip, get someone to come with you or meet you there (loads of helpful landyzoners not too far from telford) and if it is ****, walk away.

You gotta be prepared to travel a bit though.

she says .. hi the bulk head is solid and the chassis is solid no rot or rust been red oxcide and 2pk black and wax oiled, you will not be disapointed with this as he as owned 4 of these and they are always solid trucks when he as sold them thanks sue

, id love a look at this and if it ran nice and was solid, 3k id snap it up, its a 5hr £70 (single) train journey away !! :(

ive already just asked that,if he wanted the sale and if he was 100% confident it would be looked right over and given a good inspection no fault or hidden nasty would be found and was confident id hand over the cash..if hed be willing to drive half way to get 3k in his pocket, wel see what they say

but, id be willing to travel for the right one, if i was certain about this id jump on train and go buy it of course and have the adventure to bring it home, a fella came from the isle of skye-inverness- plane to manchester then plane to southampton, then i picked him up from there, in my bmw e30 i sold him, a hell of a journey !!! but then the car and its history and life with me was very well documented on a bmw forum with hundreds of posts and pics from my ownership, so he could be very very sure it was right and not hiding anything, to make that journey

is anyone on here right near telford who could/wouldnt mind popping along to inspect it for me ? maybe if someone who really knew them on here could do that and gave a good report and it was a worthy nice purchase, id jump on the train and make the 5 hr trip

really...i know ive looked at a few now of various states, but im no expert and wouldnt be able to expertly pick out any hidded cover up bodges etc, and what i find off putting is 99% of defenders listed for sale state "solid chassis and bulkhead" ....which really isnt the case is it, and travelling hours and hours and the expense to see that, id be sick , that bloody black one i went to see last week he said was all nice and solid, it was a heap, bulkhead totaly shot away , i was annnoyed id payed £5 in petrol to go see that , let alone £80 and a 8 hours round trip or whatever

and what about the 2nd gear crunch they mention ?

Go do it - it will be an adventure. You need to be aware that if you sit in the front next to Storm, he will try and fondle your groin though. Otherwise it should be fine.
