How to seal the front window on Series

I have a 2A and water comes through the front windows round the edges...not so bad when it's just when you are using the windscreen washers and a bit comes in - not so fun when it is p****ng it down with rain and you get drenched (even made a makeshift tunneling system out of crisp packets to direct the water from the windows and then out of the open gearbox hatch LOL - ah the things we do eh?)

So, going to take the front windows out and then re-seal them. Do I just use silicon? Or that weird putty stuff which I have kicking about and don't like too much? Or Is it better to buy a proper seal for it (and if so, what one, tried searching but cant seem to find the right thing). Or do I just cheat, leave the windows in and put a bead of silicon round the edges of the panes?
 
I've just put mine back in today, talk about coincidence. I just used the black silicone stuff in tubes. Haven't seen a "proper" seal before, not that that means anything. Anyway i used it before and have had no probs, plus it's cheap .
 
just a thought, since i don't know wot a series 2 window consists of, does it have the screwed on strips of ally around the inside? and is it a split windscreen?
 
Yup, split screen and has those metal bits screwed in to hold the panes inplace :)

Good to hear that Silicon has worked for you - unless I get other suggestions that is no doubt what I will do.
 
Well...re-sealed the front windows today. most of the time taken was scraping the old seal off!

Came back half an hour and one of the panes has cracked in the corner - how blodey annoying! Perhaps I did the metal bits up too tight? Anyone got a window pane kicking around?
 
ok mate no worries. Didn't realise they were that cheap, doesn't seem worthwhile keeping mine now lol. Might even treat myself to some scratch free and paint free new ones.:D
 
The correct sealant is "Dum-Dum" a black non hardening putty. It allows a bit of flex, sounds as if you may have found out why they use it!
 
keep a bundle of nurses backside cleaning latex gloves in your glove box or whatever, good for keeping shat off yer fingers including silicone or paint, I use them all the time on vehices and anything crapped up.
 
Yeah, that would be a sensible thing to do! I am quite happy to have silicon on my hands, unless it's black...doesn't really stick to me anyway tbh. Have tried using gloves on with silicon but it's almost impossible to then use your fingers as a smudging tool!
