How to buy Disco

Hi,
I'm planing to buy Discovery 2.
Budget is about 5000 pounds.
What I don't wan't to buy is a Disco + problems witch I will not know of. As it usually happens.
My idea is to spend less on the car (Ł3000) and spend the rest on the repairs.
One:
I'll not be disappointed when something will go wrong
Two:
I know where I'm standing after repairs

Basically I would like to hear your opinion about my idea.

Honestly if you search d2 buying guides or d2 review or anything along those lines. You will find a whole evenings worth of info to give you fighting chance of not buying a lemon.
 
another great intro/first post. read the forums, decide for yourself, spanner skills? off roading? communication skills?

I got it!!
Just bought - Discovery 300 tdi 1997 3 door.
A little project as rust is trying to eat back panel and few other places.
Plus dents. Any way its in good condition I would say (thanks to the last owner)

It's all fine.
Boot floor was replaced by previous owner :)
Just a slight attack on the sides in the corners.
Nothing extreme.
