When i first got my 2000 freelander i noticed that when turning on a full lock or reversing it felt a bit tight like brakes on a bit,i posted a question on here and was told thats how they are because of the viscous coupling system and most other peoples like it so never thought much more about it,however when i drove my m8,s 1998 freelander today that he has just got i noticed the steering was lighter and there seemed to be no tightness???both motors have about 81000 on clock, same tyres and correct pressures,so just wondering why mine would seem tighter on lock?should it be a bit tight or loose??

Two possible reasons why your mates car is light. Firstly, the VCU has failed and is not transferring drive. Second reason is the VCU and both half propshafts have been removed to render the vehical more fuel efficent, all be it, front wheel drive only. The latter being known as MONDO mode. (Don't ask, I don't know why MONDO!!).

Hope that helps.

known as MONDO mode. (Don't ask, I don't know why MONDO!!).

Because Mad Hat Man coined the phrase, thinking that forum member Mondo was running his FL in 2wd, the name stuck.

The irony is Mondo never even went 2wd,

Peeps call it with mondeo mode by mistake, more apt dont you think?

Ah - but he did, 1736 ;). his VCU failed - but didnt lock solid, it failed in "no drive" mode so his motor was running in only 2wd - ie "Mondo mode".

Not how I recall it ;) he owned a metallic grey one, there was a post on here with it on the back of a recovery truck, it will be buried in the archives of the 37k posts you have :)

they all feel tight on full lock, but as no vcu will be the same some will feel tighter than others. you will need to do a torque test on the vcu to see if it is too stiff.
