How the hell do you make this noise!?

I didn't think it was possible on a normal engine! That isn't mine, I just saw it whilst looking for videos of a straight through 200!

Yeh I see why now. As the oil pressure drops the shaft binds and causes the stall and flutter! Bad times for that guy then!

How can you make a 300tdi turbo flutter like that when they don't have anything to stop the airflow (butterfly) to make the turbo stall and flutter!?

You can get diesel dump valves, usually quite pricey and they involve creating a restriction to store the compressed air and then vent it off giving a "tssshhst" sound.

There is no performance benefit at all.

However I admit this tdi does sound more like spool surge than a BOV.

it probably just some one managed to fit a blow off valve from a petrol vehicle to their diesel. god knows why they would bother though.
believe it or not most diesel Jap trucks and even down to the likes of Shoguns have a pressure relieve valve on inlet manifold.
seems the latests craze with all the evos and wrx in the neighbor hood here. The noise is identical.
kind of like this...

I don't unddrstand really how a bov can work on a land rover engine tho. There is nothing to stop the airflow to make the pressure build up in the first place. Also when a bov is fitted, it makes one tssshhh sound. The 'pigeon' noise comes from the compressor surging because the pressure in the inlet overcomes the pressure in the exhaust so the turbo stalls.. At least thats how i understand it. As said I think it's ****ed!

totally pointless on a diesel but they still suffer from a small amount pressure, certainly not enough to warrant the hassle of fitting one of those valves though. could well be poked but by judging by all his other bling pics in the video i think it is something he is probably proud of being able to achieve. as for the noise some of the petrol engine valves do make that some sound as well as the common noise like you mention

I thought it was called 'waste gate chatter' so I Googled it and found this

Wastegate chatter myth

There is confusion in the automotive world about so called "wastegate chatter" or "turbo flutter". A noise created on lifting off the throttle in a turbocharged car, commonly described as a chipmunk or a rattlesnake, is often stated incorrectly as being a result of the turbo's wastegate closing.
The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo after the airflow is abruptly halted by the throttle plate closing, called compressor surge. However, in some cases, i.e. where the throttle plate doesn't open fast enough or is set up to only react to high boost, some chatter will remain. Surge can occur on diesels when the turbo is attempting to pressurize the air at a higher pressure ratio than the compressor wheel can flow at a given speed. Diesel engines have no use for a blow off valve as they do not have a throttle plate.
The chatter noise is very noticeable on World Rally Cars, where anti-lag is used.
A compressor stall like this can cause excess stress and wear on the turbo's shaft or bearings under higher load applications of the turbo (around 15 psi (1.0 bar) and greater depending on the trim and flow rate of the compressor side).
Actual wastegate flutter occurs instead under partial boost conditions such as partial throttle near the boost threshold. It sounds like FftFftFft not ShuShuShu and is caused by the rapid opening and closing of the wastegate at boost levels near the spring pressure. It is commonly heard more clearly and may be more prominent on cars with modified intake silencers, up-pipes, and or downpipes, and is not harmful.

Sounds like a waste-gate to me? but coming from the air intake? ... weird

I love the sound of a diesel turbo waste-gate blow off and wish the turbo was big enough on my 200 to make it. Apparently it is down to the size of the turbo and boost pressure? Which in a way makes sense.

A lot of tractors 'blow-off'. I wouldn't need a radio if i could listen to that sound all day long.

sounds normal to me ...its got a straight through system and sounds like it has a free flow induction and may have the pump tuned a little ..normal to hear this on tuned dervs

That new holland at the beginning sounds awesome! It has to be said, when I has no air filter and exhaust on my 200disco conversion, I could hear that sound very slightly.. I think il up the boost abit and take it off again, if it does it louder, the zaust is stayin off!
