I did that too, but with the plastic thingy that closes a bread bag.

Now go make a proper introduction in "Introduce Yourself" so's everyone can meet you.

:welcome2:

Get an uncle in the SAS! My dad had his snapped key removed and a new one cut using their little box of tricks at the roadside while we waited!

Job done.

Big QUESTION coming in a second.

I had to take the whole lot off and access barrel to remove bit of key, BUT when reassembly, dropped a bolt down near sterring column and FOUND what I believe is the imobilser sensor (it was just lying around).

The link for the ebay replacement shown below shows this part attached to the ignition part - IS THAT CORRECT, or is it supposed to be somewhere else (I was cold and couldn't get it to fit as shown in picture in ebay link and gave up for another day):
Landrover discovery ignition barrel and key | eBay shows the ring "FIT" printed on side

I am buying a new mechanism since I broke the steering column lock, and for now the sensor is tie-wrapped near the ignition, but where SHOULD it go?

Disco starts fine if I wave the fob around and dashboard light goes out and off I go - will do proper repair when new part arrives.

It should just slot over the front of the ignition lock as if it was a washer on a bolt.

Thanks for that.
I tried that but guess the cold got to me.
goodness knows how it has worked for all these years - it is apparent that someone has had the dashboard off before.
Will try again when new part arrives,
Funny enough, the pdf manula doesn't show a picture of it (well, not that I can find)
cheers
Jim

You can put it where you like providing the cable is lon enough and you can get the key close enough to it. I've relocated mine for security reasons.;)

My key has a plip though rather than a chip in the key itself.

Ah, good idea.

I could do the same because I have the key fob (so that means my key isn't chipped?).

Just got to wait for the new part to arrive because I don't even have a sterring column lock (since I broke it !)

cheers
