This will be a silly question, but i hope that it will spark a debate which will help me to decide how old landy i can confortably buy knowing that it will work for next 10 years or so...

I have had 2001 110 hard top which i wrote off, there was a thread about it here, now i would like to buy another but i can only spend around £2000 so do you recon that i can get something to start with? i mean i would love to do it up through out but not immadiately, it may take me couple of years, i guess i would take care and fix chasis and body first to stop corosion and this and that and then start adding bits and bobs for off roading.

Is it worth to start with something more than 15 years old or is it waste of time?

Thanks for comments

A 300tdi pre electronic fly by wire version. should get one for that if not look for a tidy 200tdi. keep a few quid for waxoil and the usual bits to do like propshaft UJ's and wheel bearings Jai

what would be the milege to be worried about? i mean i know its not going to be 20 000 but is over 120 000 too bad, or can i expect some time without major repairs on the engine?

you are asking how long a rope is...there are no doubt LRs in here knocking on 300000m and there are some(talking to a guy in here at weekend with a blown engine at 40000m)with alot less than that.......and at the end of the day only you knows what jobs you could tackle yourself when things go wrong, but i guess if you search the classifieds carefully then in the current climate there may well be people looking to off load a cheap LR for the kind of £££ your talking.....the hard bit is finding a good one for that kinda money

I can see what u r saying but, i know that there are badc engines, i guess that it depends on maintenance and the driver. i want to get general idea on the life expectancy of that engine. I do not want that engine to run for ever, and what i do want to do is to slowly change most of the things including engine for new or newer when the time is right and money is in the account. What i want for now is to get something that will see me throught 4-6 months without costing me another 2000 and we can disregard possibility of me being unlucky and getting something that will fall aparty within 2 weeks. or i can allways write it offf in two days again

Can't really go wrong with 200tdi defender take somone in the know with you to check the chassis and other landy bits if you cannot get a good 200 (Ithink you will) get a pristine 2.5na but it will be like driving a tractor and reall really slow but most certainly reliable if its a goodun. Jai

don't dismiss either the NA or the TD engined pre dependers as both (with sensible care) will do many 100,000s of miles - 2K would buy you a VERY good orginal 90 or 100 (not a depender) - and when eventually the engine gives up the ghost fit a nicely run in disco 200 and enjoy another 10 years of happy dependering - much better to spend 2k on a orginal well cared for 90 or 110 than to buy a lemon of a 200Tdi engined version

all dependers drive like tractors, it's a design feature

so i can see that the opinions are different on that 300 tdi, i keep looking around but to mee (based on autotrader prices) that this credit crunch hasnt affected LR prices too much.

I have had Td5 engine in my old one but it sounded prety good and drove great, the body was in great shape and cost me 4000 even now i dont seem to be able to find one that good for that price so i think i was lucky. That is actualy one of the reasons why i want to see what u all think about it and the price i want to pay...

so how old are we talking when u say original? i take it when u say nice one it means good body and frame without serious rust problems..
thanks for advice...

orginal - one that hasnt had 28 owners all of whom had a fetish for checker plate, an account at halfords and who expected it to perform like a sports car - one that's got it's orginal engine and has has some sensible maintenace carried out on it

you'll never find a rust free one, even 20 year old ones with fist sized holes in the chassis can be better buys that early TD5 models

just dont buy the first one you look at and get to know what a good one looks like

There has been 3 sold down here recently and one was imaculate roof rack and un messed with he brought it 2 years ago for about 2300 and sold it for 1900 quick sale to buy an R1 he is my neibour. Jai

My other half wanted me to get it for her cos the reg was **** PMS. whenever we saw it outside my mums house it reminds me of her going psycho. Jai

Thanks sean, that landy honestly doesnt look as its about to fall apart, doesnt include the engine;) but i guess with my limmited budget it may do..., will be great to see how much it will go for...
