Hello all

I am new to landrovers but have been reading alot of posts on here from the various sections of the forum.

Here is my question...

Round the corner from me is a 88" pick up, i belive it is a series three. Its reg plate says h reg. Its sat in someones front garden looking very sorry for itself and in need of serious restoration. Now the restoration wouldnt be a problem as i am a mechanical engineer by trade but what is confusing me is how much it is worth.

I know condition is a huge factor but i was reading landrover owner internation mag and it gave a guide for one needing restoration as around £300, now i havnt seen any this cheap so im just wondering if i went and offered this amount would i be walking back down the drive with a sore chin where they had planted one on me for being so cheeky?

I would love to show my boys how a real vehicle is built and works and how to repair things instead of going through life with this throw away culture that we have nowadays. But help is required on the price of this thing.

Thanks in advance

Jack

P.S this is my first post so hello to you all

Hi 4x4jack, :welcome2:to the world of land rovers and if it is a H reg then it is an early tax exempt series 3 and about 200 to 300 pounds sounds about right and your right about the learning about older cars how they were built and learning skills from them, i learnt so much from my grandad and dad working on land rovers and cars from about 4 or 5 (may have been bugging them at that age but it sunk in) good luck with your purchase

:welcome2:

H reg would put it August 1969 to July 1970 which from the plate makes the one you are looking at a S11a, S111s entered production in 1971. Its easy to tell the difference,
A S111:-
Has an inlet hole in the passenger side wing for the heater.
The clocks are in front of the driver in a padded dash.
A plastic front grill.

There are lots of other things that identify which model is which but the above is the easiest for a quick check.

If its been left to rot for a long time it needs a good look over before you part with any money. It may need so many replacement parts you could end up just buying a pair of number plates and a log book.

If its been sitting there for years just offer £150 and at least if it turns out to be scrap you can sell some of the parts and make your money back

Thanks for the reply guys

Thinks there is some good points there to consider i.e dont get carried away and buy one thats effectively a pair of number plates and a log book lol

Anyway i will go and have a chat with them and report on my progress. You never know you may be seeing an thread on here tittled 'why did i start this'

Thanks chaps

:welcome2: Jack, to the madhouse :D
Just to remind you ...
:nopics::nopics::nopics:
Good luck with your research, and I hope you get it at a good price :D

Although as its a H reg these would be worth more than the vehicle alone to a slightly less law abiding person.

Approach it as buying scrap, not a project.

A lot depends on whether the chassis is repairable or not. Some are rotten all over and you can do the research for how much a replacement is. If it just needs a few hours with the welder then IMO worth £300 all day for a TE repairable series 2A. Can you weld?

yes mate, im maintenance manager for a laser cutting and welded fabs company whos main customer base is JCB and agco so i have loads of steel (custom cutting) and weld supplies at my disposal. Luck boy i am lol:D

a verry lucky boy indeed id love to have acess to a lazer cutting machine :cool::cool::cool:

jus imagined owning the only series landy on earth with a polished stainless steel lazer cut chassis ......mmmmmmm...nice :cool::cool:

you really need to assess the structure of the motor, that being the chassis and bulkhead primarily

the chassis is mostly pretty easy to repair but some sections you'd have to fabricate yourself or hopefully get from a chassis that's being scrapped, outriggers, dumbirons and rear crossmembers can be purchased new, 2 - 2.5mm sheet steel for where you need to let new plate in...

a new replacement chassis is expensive

bulkheads can be repaired and most of the trickier shaped pressings can be bought, it's just a bitch trying to find/remove the spotwelds as they were hand done (lesCr on ebay for your footwells if you want/need the best replacements)

a new replacement bulkhead can be bought i believe, identical copy of the original but will cost about as much as a new chassis

plenty of standard 2.25 petrol engines about in usable condition, some more worn than others but all relatively inexpensive

gearboxes if looked after in one your year are really nice but no synchro on first/second (i run a '65 109 with a really sweet gearbox)

rear axles have very little to go wrong with them

front axles have chrome plated swivels for the steering, this rusts and peels if left standing for a few years, not too expensive to rebuild

door frames rot, rear door cracks if it has the spare mounted on it and rots

the electrics are relatively simple and new harnesses can be bought

springs are a pain, not many makes worth getting as the steel used is often crap, the ones to get will need research and folks advice, that is assuming yours are shot

the brakes are probably non assisted so you'll have a little culture shock when you first drive it and try stopping

if you have a nice interior be careful with it as new seats are expensive and panels/headlining are either expensive or impossible to find

you'll find the heater will probably need a flush (that's if it doesn't leak) but don't expect to go out without wooly hat and gloves in the winter in a station wagon

don't toss the brake master cylinder if it's not working, it can most likely be rebuilt and the originals are the best

for rivet counter knowledge of the Series 2/2a i'd suggest joining the Series 2 Club forum (yours will/should be the 2a)

some folks consider the late 2a to be the optimum Series Landrover

150-300quid is a very nice price if you can get it for that with hopefully not too much work needed but expect to possibly part with 500, budget double that for repairs if there's lots of little bits to buy, a full rebuild can set you back 2.5-3k if you're easily parted from your money (again this depends on condition), i've so far spent roughly 1200-1300quid (maybe more) on my 109 utility including buying it, i've done every bit of work on it myself except the blasting of the bulkhead once i'd repaired it but i was lucky and started with a pretty good base vehicle and a lot of the bits cost me nothing as i already had them on the shelf from breaking other landys plus i've been patient to find parts at a price i was prepared to pay, i've still a few bits to get though

invest in a lot of penetrating fluid and a selection of wire mops for your angle grinder along with a few 1mm cutting discs for the odd time when nothing else will remove that stubborn item (mostly spring bolts)

final point is there "shouldn't" be any metric nuts or bolts on your landy so you'll be wanting a few imperial spanners

i hope you get it (and don't give up halfway through)

edit
photos are a must, don't come back without any :p

I'm in studley too. I know the one your on about.

I live round the corner, so will try and get some pics today.

It's been there the whole time I've lived here, so about 5 years. It was well green with algae when. Moved here, and it has been living. That bush all that time.

I'd say that the chassis n the left might be shot.

However, I have access to a disco 2 should you get it and need help pulling her out.

Keep us informed :)
