Hi Guys, Im new to the group, ive looked a fair bit over the last few months and decided to join to get some help..

Im looking at buying a 90 300tdi at the moment, think ive found one with a good solid chassis, bulkhead and the engine seems ok.. However, it is a stolen recovered, bought from a police auction.. The tealeaves sprayed it matte black (which comes off with powerwasher).. It has also been fitted with old style landrover doors, not the push button types.. It has also had a new roof on it, well, an old roof..

Its the right money, IF the parts to restore it to its original glory are the right price..

SO... my question is ''How much for the parts below (either recon or new)

A pair of push button doors
A new roof
A set of standard wheels and tyres
A respray of the doors and roof.. or the whole thing (its red btw...)

Any help muchly appreciated!! :)

Brgds,

Ben

120 each
50 max
70-90 per corner
just jet wash the paint off, if you make it too nice looking it'll get nicked again

Brill, thanks for the fast reply..

Ive been told that i would probs get £400 for the set of rims and tyres thats on it (theyre offroading ones)..

Would the old doors be worth anything? Theyre fairly sound.. Just not original.. Also, any way to make them less nickable?! (I know its the million dollar question!)

Ben

A pair of push button doors - why? the old ones are better they don't get the handles ripped off! If you sell the old doors on ebay someone will buy then particularly if they have the sliding windows (challenge trucks like these so they can take the whole windowtop out on race day). I would consider whether u actually want to change them as I wouldn't the old are a better design. My opinion.

A new roof - keep an eye out on ebay there are loads on there from £1.50 lol.

A set of standard wheels and tyres - Again try ebay if you want a complete set otherwise you get what you pay for BFGoodrichs 265's are around 120 a corner plus around 25 for a steel wheel. Look around for the best deals.

A respray of the doors and roof.. or the whole thing (its red btw...) - I would do the whole thing if you are willing to do the prep work yourself it would be AROUND 500 mark. Paint alone will be 3-400 quid. And a fire anf forget job in the garage would probably be 1000.

Shop around to get the best deals. Unless the roof is knackered then I personally would concentrate on getting it sprayed and rubber'd.

just don't bolt lots of silly looking bling things to it, keep it dog rough looking and a bale of hay in the back will deter most

what makes you say the doors are non standard ?

Its got lots of silly bits of wire going from roof to bonnet now, lots of chequerplate (i dont like it) and rubbing bars along the sill.. Its also been raised on offroad springs etc..

SO i intend to get rid of the awful aluminium, the bits of wire and make it a bit more like standard...

I thought that with the age of the landy, the doors would automatically be push button...

Im not wanting to use the landy for offroading as you guys use them, just a bit of lamping, shooting and fishing..

the older doors are still better because they are less prone to annoying breakage, this is only my opinion. the problem you have is if you were going to change a panel you would have all the gubinz like window winders and door handles etc. then it would be cheap but you need a whole door and insides which is quite a lot of stuff like glass and mechanisms etc. I would look for 2 whole doors on ebay or see is someone wants your old ones

If you mean branch wires you need to shift them anyway they are illegal on UK roads. I would keep the chequer plate on the front wings as well as they get dented in they are only thin aluminium. Those solid side sill are a good mod they stop people opening there car doors onto your new paint work.

Dave

You sound to me like you need a disco mate lol

Good tip about people opening car doors onto your car! hehe..

I will settle for keeping the same doors for the time being, i guess theres no point in throwing money at it unnecessarily.. What ive noticed while looking for a defender is that someone spends a fortune on doing one up and then expects to sell it for a huge price.. I shall avoid falling into that trap!

The aluinium sill trims are just pop riveted over the original sill.. always makes me feel uneasy as you dont know whats under them..

So who thinks im mad!?

hehe yeah, i was referring to the chequerplate (or however you spell it!)

I did notice a small rust hole in the chassis, in the driver side rear wheelwell.. otherwise its sound.. and fairly clean.

If I said it was £4000 as described in previous posts, what would your thought be? its got 112000 miles, no tax or test (may come with a years test) and all the gubbins i was on about.. average interior..

most people would sooner remove push button style doors and fit the older lift up handle type..if i could get some i would have them,i hate my push button ones the push in bit always gets mud in it and sticks in and is a bastid to release it again, ive tried allsorts..

Well, havent bought it yet, was trying to work out if it was a good buy or not.. been looking for one for the last 4-5 months and to be honest, you dont seem to get a lot of bang for your buck.. im looking for a 300tdi van or pickup SWB... and for a budget of about 5500 or max 6000..

Im not sure whether its better to go for a low mileage 300tdi or a higher mileage td5.. bearing in mind i will probs only do 5000 miles a year..

Answers on a post card!
