How much oil does your 19j breath ? and oil coming from turbo?

Thanks for your feedback, I'm changing the engine in the not too distant future,I have a replacement to go in its place. I will then strip it to investigate what's causing the crankcase pressure.

When you next set the tappets, try starting it up briefly with the rocker cover off. You can often see gas blasting up the pushrod tubes from a blown gasket. They commonly blow the gaskets.

Hi guys, I too was getting oil in air filter ( crankcase pressure not to bad) but every 6 months when changing air filter, the bottom of filter was oiled. So whilst doing a service last week I put the breather pipe from crankcase into a plastic bottle. A week and about 400 miles later- no oil in bottle at all!! Does anyone know why? Don't get me wrong, I'm taking this as good news but it is a bit puzzling.

Is the air flow going through the filter actually drawing the oil up?
You can use the "Venturi" effect to suck liquid up by passing air over a small tube inserted in a larger air flow .
Same principle was used in reverse in the coal mines mines to get ventilation into offshoots where there was not enough room for larger fans

Thanks for reply Blackburn. I was wondering if the air flow was actually pulling oil up, but wasn't sure if the flow was powerful enough. Anyway I'd ordered an oil catch can but not sure if I want to fit it now- don't want the pipe going back to air box incase it increases air flow from crankcase as discussed. So my problem is; do I block off the inlet going to the air box ( thinking about water getting in) I'm sure no water would get in the hose from crankcase as it's blowing not sucking.
Any advice will be gratefully accepted guys.

If you aren't using the intake point into the inlet tract, blank it off. I don't see how water would get in in normal driving though? The inlet I think you mean is at the height of the top of the wing?

Cheers turboman, just thinking ahead really- thinking of putting snorkel on.

Are there any advantages to having a closed system (fitting oil catch can and pipe to air box)? Or should I just leave it in bottle and block inlet on air box off?

There are no advantages as far as the engine is concerned, and for decades landrover crankcases just ran open to the air, as did all the others.

But nowadays there is concern about the environmental damage caused by crankcase fumes. Modern vehicles have complex systems to clean up emissions, but the old 2.5 td and 2.5 na just had the simple system you see.

So really its up to how strong your environmental conscience is, but if you do decide to route it completely away from the air intake, I suggest you do it subtly, so as not to upset the mot tester.

That looks pretty good to me, lots of original bits, a bit of sensible reinforcement. I go under too many low branches for that roof rack, but horses for courses.
