and didnt a 200tdi disco pull 3 or 4 railway carriages on railtracks for promotional things when first out. well over 50 tons i think i look for pics

mate, you can tow 3500 with your defender, only know cos, i use transit vans in work and to tow a 2.5 tonne machine on a plant trailer we gotta borrow the landy. large transit i drive can only tow 2500 just to compare. cheers.

Maximum towing capacity 3.5 tonnes (the weight of the trailer) but the trailer must be braked. You'll see articles around where people have had air brakes fitted for trailers. Performance wouldn't be dynamic it might be said.

300 Tdi brochure attached to this comment. If it's a 4 wheel trailer with coupled brakes, Defenders can legally tow up to 4000kg (4 tons)

I've pulled a trailer weighing a ton loaded with a van weighing 2.2 ton so pulling 3.2 tons, add weight of landy at about 1.8 tons so all up train weight of five tons, pulled it no problems at all and legal

Coupled brakes makes a difference in any tow capacity. Not many on here have this set up.
There is also reference that maybe a defender can only do it in “low”??

Personally not sure I would even want to tow 3.5t in the 90:eek::D. Break out the Range Rover for that:)

Yes a thread revival but a common question.and a minefield.

I've pulled a Disco 3 and a loaded twin axle cattle trailer out of a field after he got bogged down..

must of been over 5 tonne ;)

Low range 1st my Rangie handled it superbly ;)

I've seen a few 110's pulling stuck arctics so they can pull when required! ;)

Iirc the reason land rovers have such a high towing weight is due to them being fitted with low range box.
Not many of the competitiors have such high towing weights.

Main thing in the UK is what the drivers licence says they can tow, I think if born after 1997 max trailer weight is 750kg loaded ie all up weight.

I didnt realise until the other day after your 70th birthday you apparently lose your right to drive up to 7.5 ton on a std car licence?

What they “can pull” and what’s legal for public roads is where people fall foul.

Although most LR family have a 3.5t capacity not all license holders do.

I brought a Disco on a trailer (trailer weight 1 ton) from Cornwall, pulled it with 200tdi at 55 mph on motorway no problem, over 300 miles home and returned 20/25 mpg round trip, felt safe as houses all the way back.

Nothing to do with birth year. Its do with when they passed their test.

Thanks for this, i wasn't sure on the specifics and i might end up towing my mums morris with my series if she's not up to driving it home.

So Series being 1340kg + Morris at 780kg = Plenty of weight left for a trailer.
