How many people driving petrol Hippos?

I've had my 1.8 for near two years now, swapped a bike for it. Didn't come with any history but, touch wood, it hasn't let me down yet. Do the usual checks and don't drive like a Richard and I reckon they're as good as most.

You done well, if you find a good 'un they'll give many years of happy motoring. Only big worry with them is the head gasket but if caught early they're cheaper to fix than the TD4 injector issue.
Just keep an eye on the coolant level and oil for mayo and you'll be fine. ;)
 
Ive got a freelander a 1.8, i bought it with a suspect HG failure, ive just put some K seal in it and its sealed it. Although ive only done that because im going to be putting a turbo engine in it and it's probably going to do about 200 miles before it goes for scrap.

A K series that hasn't overheated is worth fixing. Or selling on to someone who is after fixing one ;)

It overheated....... Just ast after I fitted it, i took it for an MOT, got there and realised that the bottom hose clip hadnt been put on properly, it wasnt a long drive but probably enough. Considering there are three freelander 1.8s in the scrapyard in redruth I really didnt think it was worth it.

Possibly not then. I expect that they are there because of HGF or IRD failure. Sadly it's not worth fixing early Freelander's with those faults these days.

How is Redruth scrap yard for prices. I've never been down there for parts, although I did have a job interview down there many years ago.:eek:

It's only worth fixing if you want to keep the car. I like them but SWMBO wanted a diesel so as she is the one driving it 99% of the time ours had to go. Stupid really cause I had it running sweet as a nut with every common Freelander issue sorted. :(

Don't get me wrong, I'd be more than happy to repair the k series I have if the turbo wasn't such a simple option. I have all the parts but when the engine is only 125 GBP, its ridiculously cheap.

Macsalvage is my favourite in St Day. Ten pounds for an aerial, two switches and an interior light. Remove it yourself jobbie.

I'm definitely keeping the car, its going to get turbod :D Im going to have fun with it while I rebuild the 109 tratter and put the miles on it as I have to go to warsash quite a bit to get my chief engineer tickets. Cant do that in a 109 and the wife wont let me take our Golf ( that i pay for) because she needs it for work... :/
 
I got one its only FWD - did the HG mysen and the rear window cables - passed MOT with a few advisories - EML light on - sorted that with a new O2 sensor = £13 from china
lovely drive
2 out of 4 windows dont work, sunroof dont work but it goes ok will keep it as long as it keeps passing MOT's without needing a mortgage to fix it :D

its a toy for winter driving - got a lazyboy auto merc for summer and days out :rolleyes:

as and when i may put it back to 4wd but its not snowed here for the last 3 fook in years

but if i prang the merc it will be a write off :( 53 reg with 200k on the clock
if i prang the LR its a trip to the scrappy for a new bit and freeze my nuts off while outside putting it right :eek:
 
I bought a fixer-upper! Really easy to work on, loved every minute of it! I had to get a new cylinder head for it - which is probably the trickiest part to find in good condition (i.e. not already cooked and rendered scrap by someone else). I was lucky, and replaced the head with a known good one for £100, then it is just the cost of parts. I used the Payen "Blue" elastomeric gasket - which happens to be the most expensive, but fixing one yourself should only cost a couple of hundred quid - and obviously much less if the head hasn't been toasted :)

Currently enjoying mine - new Geolanders to fit over the weekend. Most faults now sorted :) Still have the a few more tasks: replace lower wishbones and work out where the drive line noise is coming from (probably the front prop bearing), and my Hippo will be nicely sorted :D
